San Jacinto Christian, Ascension Academy highlight TAPPS North Regionals

San Jacinto Christian Academy qualified six athletes to state while Ascension Academy advanced four individuals and two relays to the state meet this past week.

Competing at the TAPPS Class 3A North Regionals, SJCA saw sprinter Audrey Lane dominated winning three events, and qualify in four overall.

Lane started her day winning gold in both the long and triple jump. Lane leaped 16-8 1/2 to claim the long jump title, then popped off a 34-6 1/2 to win the triple jump. During the running finals, the senior earned her third trip to the gold medal stand clocking a 13.16 in the 100 meter dash. Lane finished the day earning a bronze in the 200 meter (26.94).

Teammate Caroline Karr was the only competitor to advance in all three long distance events. Carr won three bronze medals in the 3200 meter (12:51.67), the 800 meter (2:30.30), and the 1600 meter run (5:35.97). Peyton Smith took silver in the 400 meter run with a new personal-best of 1:00.12, and Rachel Newman qualified second in the 100-meter hurdles (17.63).

On the boys side, Brandon Jones went 10-6 to win the pole vault event, and Hudson Cunningham claimed a bronze in the 3200 meter run (11:00.57).

Ascension Academy competed at the TAPPS Class 2A North Regionals.

The 400 meter relay squad of Amryn Cowen, Veronica Portillo, Gabrielle Parker, Sophomore Trinity Chambers, took third place to advance with a time of 54.12. The 1600 meter relay of Jennie Smith, Portillo, Parker and Mia Crawford are also headed to state with a time of 4:32.97.

Crawford and Parker weren’t done. Crawford punched a ticket in the 300-meter hurldes (52.05), and the high jump (4-8). Parker is headed to state in the 100 meter dash clocking a 13.33, and the triple jump (33-1).

Teammate Abigayle Stubby-Kern was impressive in the 3200 and 1600 meter runs. Stubby-Kern ran a 12:34.51 to get a bronze in the 3200 meter, followed by a 6:02.53 for silver in the 1600 meter.

In boys action, freshman Elijah Lara grabbed a silver in the boys 110-meter hurdles (16.45), and a bronze in the 300-meter hurdles (43.78).

The TAPPS State Track and Field meet is set for May 6-7 at Midway ISD’s Panther Stadium in Waco.
