Former Amarillo High standout and West Texas A&M senior Lexy Hightower was named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, announced by the league, Wednesday.
Hightower has had a storied career as one of the best to ever wear a Lady Buff uniform.
The two-time LSC Player of the Year has cemented herself as one of the top players in all of NCAA Division II Basketball going 130-of-240 (54.2%) from the floor this season including 31-of-74 (41.9%) from deep.
“It’s a great feeling,” Hightower said. “I am honored to be named Player of the Year again. But I could be where I am without my teammates. My teammates are a huge part of every success that myself or anyone on the team receives. The ultimate goal will always be to win, and to compete to our best.”
The quick guard that can knock a jumper down from any part of the floor currently ranks seventh on WT’s all-time scoring list with 1,625 career points, and is only 38 points behind Brandi Green for 6th.
“I think it’s rare to find a player that goes and pursues after a goal, and does it with every piece of her being,” WT coach Kristen Mattio said. “That’s what make her special. Her preparation, is incredible, and she can score at all three levels. That’s rare. The moment she steps on the court she’s poised, focused and locked in.”
Hightower’s teammate Braylyn Dollar, a Lubbock Monterey grad, picked up her second consecutive Sixth Woman of the Year accolade, while Jillian Sowell was named to the All-Freshman Team.
Locally, Nazareth graduate and Lubbock Christian guard Allie Schulte was named as an All-LSC First-Team selection. Schulte is a leader for the No. 1-ranked Lady Chaps, who recently set the Division II record for consecutive wins at home with 88. On the year, Schulte is averaging 14.6 points a game, pulling down 3.9 boards a contest, while dishing out 3.4 assists.
