Amarillo High takes down Lubbock-CooperÂ
Amarillo High made it a not so welcoming homecoming for former head coach Mike Moffitt and his Lubbock-Cooper team, as the Lady Sandies swept the Lady Pirates, 25-18, 25-19, 25-11, at the AHS Activity Center on Friday night.
The Lady Sandies complete the first half on fire with a perfect 8-0 mark in District 3-5A and are now 27-6 overall. The Lady Pirates (22-11) drop two games back of AHS in third place at 6-2.
Moffitt made his first visit to Amarillo High after leaving last spring for LCP. During his five years, Moffitt kept the Lady Sandies tradition alive going 157-47 at AHS with a 48-2 district mark and won four straight district titles.
However, it wasn’t the welcome back he was hoping for. The Lady Sandies, now led by head coach Haleigh Burns, outmatched the Lady Pirates from the start in the three-set sweep.
Senior outside hitter Sienna Cavalier continues her outstanding season hamming home 15 kills and hit the floor for eight digs. Teammate Bennett Rea and Payton Cash combined for 28 assists while Leia Young was strong at the net with nine blocks.
On top of Moffitt returning, his daughter, Bird, also made her return. Bird, now a senior for the Lady Pirates, was the District 3-5A Co-Defensive MVP for the Lady Sandies last season. Despite the loss, Bird had a strong showing with seven digs and four kills.
Tascosa rolls by Lubbock Coronado
The Tascosa Lady Rebels defended home court Saturday in a key District 3-5A matchup getting a four-set win against Lubbock Coronado, 25-22, 26-24, 25-27, 25-22.
On top of Amarillo High beating Lubbock-Cooper, the Lady Rebels (25-8 overall) are now all alone in second place at 7-1 in the league. Coronado (18-15) falls to 5-3 in district.
Mollie Culp did the damage on the front row knocking down 12 kills and added three blocks to lead Tascosa. Libby Miller and Addison Merrell both ran the offense combining for 47 assists. Miller finished with a team-high 26 followed by Merrell’s 21.
Per usual, Bennet Berryman paced the back row getting 27 digs.
In two other 3-5A matches, Lubbock Monterey swept Palo Duro 25-9, 25-16, 25-15. The Lady Plainsman (17-16) are 4-4 in District 3-5A. The Lady Dons (10-17) drop to 0-8.
Lubbock High was able to get by Plainview in four-sets, 28-26, 27-25, 22-25, 25-21. The Lady Westerners (13-20) are 2-6 in district while Plainview (11-15) moves to 1-7.
District 4-4A
Randall rebounds downing rival West PlainsÂ
Following their first district loss to Canyon on Tuesday, the Randall Lady Raiders rebounded in a big way with an impressive win against rival West Plains, 25-13, 19-25, 25-17, 25-15, on Saturday on Leslie Broadhurst Court at the House of Doom.
Randall improves its overall record to 19-12 but more importantly are 4-1 in District 4-4A. The Lady Wolves (19-11) suffer their first league loss falling to 4-1.
Lady Raider outside hitter Brooke Henderson played at a very high level in the victory leading the team with 19 digs and 14 kills for a double-double and served very well with five aces. Teammate Sidney Soria did what she does best dishing out 33 assists and chipped in 11 kills for a double-double of her own.
Aaniyah Kitchen totaled nine kills for West Plains, Cecilia Murrillo went for 20 assists and AJ Norman finished with 15 digs.
Canyon stays in control of 4-4A
There was no lull for the Canyon Lady Eagles following a huge win over Randall on Tuesday.
The Lady Eagles went on the road Saturday and were able to take care of Dumas in a hard-fought four-set match, 16-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-20.
Sydnee Winfrey and Laney Jones provided the power at the net. Winfrey had a team-high 10 kills with Jones right behind her with eight. Alainna Bellino ran the offense handing out 22 assists and Landri Jay’s great defense carried on with 22 digs.
Kennedy Clements tallied a game-high 17 kills for Dumas. Teammate Rylee Schacher did get a double-double thanks to 14 digs and 13 kills.
Canyon (18-10) is all alone atop the 4-4A standings at 5-0. Dumas (17-17) drops to 2-3.
Hereford hustles past BorgerÂ
It was a strong week for the Hereford Lady Whitefaces thanks to a sweep of Borger on Saturday at home, 25-9, 25-18, 25-17.
Hereford’s London Baker is having a fantastic year and that continued against the Lady Bulldogs as Baker hammered home 13 kills, dished out 12 assists and was one dig shy of a triple-double with nine.
Teammate Madi Madrigal added 11 assists and Karizma Trevino registered 11 digs.
Hereford pushes its overall record to 20-14 while improving to 3-2 in District 4-4A. Borger’s struggles continue falling to 10-16 overall and 0-5 in the league.
Pampa breezes by PerrytonÂ
Pampa is staying in the hunt in the middle of the district pack after making a trip north to Perryton and coming away with a 25-22, 25-15, 25-15, sweep Saturday.
The Lady Harvester (16-12 overall) move to 2-3 in District 4-4A. Perryton (6-20) is still seeking its first district win at 0-5.
Maecie Hawthorne registered a double-double for Pampa with 12 kills and 12 assists. Emma Perry had 19 assists and three aces with teammate Karina Gonzalez getting 10 kills.
District 1-3A
Bushland carries on 13-year district win streakÂ
It was a typical district opener for the Bushland Lady Falcons during a road sweep of Dimmitt 25-4, 25-2, 25-5, on Saturday.
What’s not typical, is the district win streak that the Lady Falcons continue to build on. With that victory against the Bobbies, Bushland has now won an incredible 90 straight district matches dating back to 2011.
Bushland (32-4) goes to 1-0 in 1-3A. Dimmitt (3-24) is now 0-1.
The Lady Falcons saw plenty of players get on the floor against Dimmitt. Brooklyn Koenig and Bella Babbit each had a team-high eight kills with Laynee Adams adding six.
Ansley Tiffin had 20 assists and Mackenzie Sims totaled 16 assists with five kills. Teammate Avery Ramos did her thing on the back row with 12 digs.
Dalhart downs FrionaÂ
Dalhart opened District 1-3A play strong defending home court with a 25-14, 25-8, 25-10, sweep against Friona on Saturday.
Emily Gaines made things difficult for Friona at the net with 13 kills and three blocks. Kammi Maddox drilled 10 kills and Elli Bezner ran the offense for 18 assists.
The Lady Wolves (19-6-1) are off to a 1-0 start in the league. The Squaws (22-7) drop to 0-1.
In District 2-3A, Shallowater defeated Tulia in three-sets, 25-11, 25-15, 25-11. The Fillies (21-11) open district play at 1-0. The Lady Hornets (10-14) are 0-1.
Idalou also opened district with a win beating Littlefield in four-sets, 26-24, 19-25, 25-17, 25-21. Idalou (19-12) starts 2-3A with a 1-0 record. Littlefield (15-13) is 0-1.
District 1-1A
Wildorado, Miami and Fort Elliott winÂ
Wildorado, Miami and Fort Elliott all picked up District 1-1A victories on Saturday.
The Lady Mustangs bounced back after a loss Tuesday, sweeping Darrouzett 25-4, 25-5, 25-6. Wildorado (4-11 overall) improves to 1-1 in district. Darrouzett (2-2) drops to 0-2.
Giselle Esparza led Wildorado with 10 assists and 10 aces for a double-double.
Miami was pushed to five-sets against Shamrock but were able to come out with a hard-fought win, 21-25, 25-15, 25-16, 22-25, 15-6.
The Lady Warriors get their first district win moving to 1-1 and are 10-12 overall. Shamrock falls to 12-9 overall and 1-1 in the league as well.
Miami’s Bentley Brooks was stellar on the back row with 35 digs and added 17 kills for a double-double. Teammate Caydee Butler did her part with 23 digs and 20 assists for a double-double.
Fort Elliott stayed atop the 1-1A standings sweeping Kelton 25-9, 25-13, 25-22. The Lady Cougars (10-6) are off to a 2-0 start to district. Kelton (6-5) is now 1-1.
TAPPS District 1-2A
In a battle for first place supremacy, it was Lubbock All Saints coming to town and getting a four-set win over San Jacinto Christian Academy, 27-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-21, on Friday night.
All Saints moves into first place of TAPPS District 1-2A at 6-0 and are 20-8 overall. SJCA falls to 5-1 in district and 26-4.
Holy Cross Catholic Acadamy downed Holy Cross Midland on Saturday, 25-15, 25-22, 25-12.
The Lady Mustangs saw three double-double performances in the victory. Lizbeth Vasquez registered 22 assists with 10 digs, teammate Madison Valdez had 10 digs with 10 kills, and Mia Luna registered 15 digs with 14 kills.
Holy Cross Catholic (15-10) improves to 3-3 in district. Holy Cross Midland (5-4) is 2-4.
In one other district game, Ascension Academy fell to Southcrest in three-sets.
