Class 3A bi-district

Dalhart stuns Shallowater

One thing is for certain. The Dalhart Lady Golden Wolves don’t know the word quit.

Dalhart rallied from a two-set deficit to beat rival Road last Saturday to claim a five-set thriller that earned the Lady Wolves the third spot.

The Lady Golden Wolves then rode that momentum into Tuesday night where they left favored Shallowater stunned with five-set dramatics thanks to a 20-25, 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 15-8, win in the Class 3A bi-district round on Tuesday at the Caprock Activity Center.

“This team has been fighting so hard these last few games,” Dalhart head coach Nicole Guidry said. “I truly believe they deserved this win. They have struggled in the middle of the season but have come back so strong. We’ve really come together as a team.”

Dalhart dropped the opening set just to bounce back to claim the next two. After the Fillies forced it to five, the Lady Golden Wolves didn’t bat an eye, dominating the final frame for the victory.

“I told this team that their fight is what carries them through the year,” Guidry said. “Last Saturday we were behind to River Road and came back and won. We just don’t give up and we go hard.”

Dylan Moore played lights out with 16 kills and three blocks. Emily Gaines followed with 11 kills and three blocks with teammate Kammi Maddox was tremendous on the front row with seven blocks and 10 kills. Elli Bezner and Jenna Pedraza combined for 41 assists and Madisson Pedraza was tough on defense registering 23 digs.

Dalhart (21-13-1) moves on to the area round to take on Denver City at 2 p.m. Saturday in Dimmitt.

Friona downs Idalou 

After dropping the opening set, Friona settled down to claim the next three for a four-set victory over Idalou, 25-27, 25-14, 25-13, 25-19, in a Class 3A b-district clash on Tuesday night at Plains High School.

Jacee Burney, Kitzy Welch and Aubree Bunker all played big at the net. Burney led the Squaws with a team-high 13 kills with Bunker adding nine and Welch powering down six. Welch also had six blocks for a strong night.

Friona (31-9) will battle Alpine in the area round at a time and place to be determined.

Bushland beats up Littlefield 

The Bushland Lady Falcons made quick work of Littlefield to open the Class 3A playoffs by soaring to a 25-5, 25-6, 25-6, sweep of the Lady Wildcats in the bi-district round on Monday night in Dimmitt.

The Lady Falcons, the four-time reigning Region I-3A champions, move to 38-6 overall and will now take on Coahoma in the area round at a time and day to be determined.

Avery Ramos paced Bushland from the back row with 18 digs and two aces. Mackenzie Sims and Ansley Tiffin combined for 37 assists with three aces each and LillyAnn Shannon registered a team-high nine kills.

District 4-4A

Canyon soars past Midland Greenwood

District 4-4A made quite the statement by making it a complete sweep of District 3-4A to open the UIL Class 4A playoffs on Monday and Tuesday night.

Randall, West Plains, Hereford and Canyon all took down Andrews, Fort Stockton, Monahans and Midland Greenwood to eliminate the district.

Canyon highlighted the victories with a sweep of District 3-4A champion Midland Greenwood. The Lady Eagles (21-21) ventured into the postseason as the No. 4-seed but played like anything but in the bi-district round taking down Greenwood (30-11) with a 25-18, 25-22, 25-15, sweep at Lubbock-Cooper High School on Monday.

Junior Sydnee Winfrey was superb on the front row with a team-best eight kills and an eye-opening seven blocks. Aiva Kerr and Riley Snelson provided the defense with nine digs a piece and Alaina Bellino quarterbacked the offense with 14 assists.

Canyon moves on to the area round to take on Fabens at a time and place to be determined.

Randall, West Plains cruise

As expected, Randall and West Plains cruised in its Class 4A bi-district matches on Tuesday night.

The Lady Raiders, who are the defending UIL Class 4A state champions, won their eighth straight playoff game getting a three-set sweep of Andrews 25-12, 25-13, 25-10 at Lubbock-Cooper High School.

Randall (38-4) advances to the area round to square off with San Elizario at a time and place to be determined.

Last year’s 4A State MVP Jordyn Gove got the playoffs started off on the right foot with 21 kills with 13 digs for a double-double. Teammate Brooke Henderson tallied nine kills with nine digs and Sidney Soria dished out 43 assists with seven digs.

West Plains, the 4-4A co-champions with Randall, breezed past Fort Stockton, 25-10, 25-12, 25-13, on Tuesday night at Seminole High School.

The Lady Wolves (38-7) move on to the area round to face Irvin at a time and place to be determined.

Senior outside hitter Jayli Franklin posted a double-double with 11 kills and 11 digs. McCall Sims played great on the back row with 14 digs and the sister combo of Zenaida and CeCe Murillo combined for 38 assists.

Hereford hustles past Monahans

Hereford once again finds itself advancing past the bi-district round after making quick work of Monahans, 25-19, 25-21, 25-9, on Tuesday night at Brownfield High School.

The Lady Whitefaces (21-17) showed the dominance of how good 4-4A is being a No. 3-seed while Monahans (25-15) was the runner-up out of 3-4A.

London Baker moved all over the court with 32 assists and served extremely well with five aces. Kyndal Blair was strong totaling 14 kills with Allee Purcella adding nine kills.

Hereford will take on El Paso Riverside in the area round at 6 p.m., on Thursday at Midland Christian High School.

Class 5A bi-district 

Tascosa takes it to Abilene High 

The Tascosa Lady Rebels put it on cruise control with a blistering of Abilene High in the Class 5A bi-district round getting a 25-12, 25-17, 25-12, sweep on Tuesday night at Lubbock Estacado High School.

Setter and leader Meredith Sanning was outstanding pacing the offense with 37 assists while adding two aces. Defensively, Ellaina and Kassidy Langeland showed up big with 10 digs a piece with teammate Bennet Berryman tallying nine. On the front row, Saphina Stanley and Berkley Harper took care of business. Stanley knocked down nine kills with five blocks and Harper chipped in with eight kills and six blocks.

Tascosa (28-15) advances to the area round to battle El Paso Ysleta at a time and place to be determined.

Amarillo High moves on with sweep of Lubbock Monterey 

For over three decades, the powerful Amarillo High Lady Sandies program has made the opening round of the UIL playoffs a winning staple and 2023 isn’t any different.

In a match that didn’t last very long, the Lady Sandies blasted Lubbock Monterey in a Class 5A bi-district contest getting a 25-11, 25-6, 25-16, sweep on Tuesday at Plainview High School.

AHS improves to 36-5 overall and will take on Del Valle in the area round at a time and day to be determined.

Blair Pennington and Sienna Cavalier were a dangerous offensive combination. Pennington handed out 27 assists with 14 of those going to Cavalier who blasted home a game-high 14 kills. Cavalier added 10 digs for a double-double while Pennington added five kills of her own with a pair of aces. Teammate Bird Moffitt did her job on the back row with a team-high 14 digs.

Class 2A bi-district 

West Texas High advances 

The West Texas High Lady Comanches were able to move on in the postseason getting a four-set win over Olton, 25-20, 25-18, 17-25, 25-19, in a Class 2A bi-district matchup at the Caprock Activity Center on Tuesday.

Scout Burris was stellar at the net with 10 blocks, Zoe Smith was strong in the back with 17 digs and Sage Lay provided the offense with 10 kills.

The Lady Comanches (17-19) move on to the area round to play Forsan at 1 p.m., on Saturday at Plainview High School.

Sanford-Fritch sweeps Post

The Sanford-Fritch Lady Eagles had no issues in their Class 2A bi-district matchup getting an easy sweep of Post, 25-10, 25-19, 25-9, on Tuesday night at Plainview High School.

Outside hitter Avery Conner had a massive effort leading Fritch with a team-high 17 kills while Kinley Roberts paced the offense with 20 assists. Teammate Kalynn Roberts chipped in with seven kills and seven digs.

Sanford-Fritch improves to 28-6 overall and advances to the area round to face Colorado City at 3 p.m., on Saturday at Lubbock-Cooper High School.

Class 1A bi-bidistrict 

Ewing leads Miami to victory 

Behind Mercedes Ewing’s stellar play, the Miami Lady Warriors were able to advance in the Class 1A bi-district round by sweeping Loop, 25-23, 25-15, 25-21, in Hereford.

The Lady Warriors are now 21-9 overall and will play Buena Vista in an area contest at 2 p.m., on Saturday in Abernathy.

Ewing, Miami’s senior leader, finished with a double-double pummeling down 20 kills with 16 digs. Bentley Brooks added a double-double of her own with 25 assists and 13 digs and tallied four aces. Teammate Cheylee Tollison totaled 12 kills.
