District 3-5A

Amarillo High claims 3-5A championships 

It was a strong showing for the Amarillo High track and field teams as the Sandies and Lady Sandies claimed the outright District 3-5A championships on Thursday and Friday at Dick Bivins Stadium.

The Sandies absolutely dominated with 235 points which was 80 points better than second place Tascosa (155).

AHS senior Pius Vokes displayed his speed with a very outstanding afternoon. Vokes was part of the Sandies silver medal sprint relay team that earned a silver (43.03). Vokes then turned it on with a season-best 10.47 to win the 100-meter dash and once again blazed to a 21.74 for a gold in the 200-meter race.

Teammate and University of Texas signee Adam Burlison walked away with three gold medals in the distance races. Fresh off a strong showing in Austin at the Texas Relays, the senior ran away from the field in the 3200-meter run with a 9:35.58, took a gold in the 800-meter clocking a 1:58.87 and ended his day winning the 1600-meter race thanks to a 4:34.91.

On the girls’ side, the Lady Sandies were equally dominant posting 253 points to win the district crown. Tascosa was second with 181.

Sierra Cornell highlighted the day for the Lady Sandies bringing home two golds and a silver. Cornell won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.96, took silver in the 400-meter (58.90) and was the second leg on the Lady Sandies gold medal mile relay team that ran a 4:05.60.

AHS teammates Willow Cornell and Keely Harper traded wins in the hurdle events. Willow edged out Harper in the 100-meter hurdles by nine tenths of a second running a 15.06 to Harper’s 15.15. In the 300-meter race, It was Harper doing the same to Willow winning a very competitive race with Harper clocking a 45.56 to Willow’s 45.65.

Not far removed from her exceptional outing at the Amarillo Relays Meet of Champions, Tascosa sprinter Saphina Stanley had another big day. Stanley qualified for the area meet in three events while bringing home two more gold medals.

Stanley raced to a 12.02 to find the gold medal stand in the 100-meter dash, and won the 400-meter race with a 58.11, then finished her afternoon helping the mile relay team to a silver running a season-best time of 4:09.97.

The 3-5A/ 4-5A Area track and field meet is set for Friday at PlainsCapital Park at Lowrey Field in Lubbock.

District 4-4A

Canyon sweeps district titles 

As expected, the Canyon track and field teams made it a clean sweep at the District 4-4A meet in Borger on Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.

The prestigious Lady Eagles program, who are the defending UIL Class 4A state champions, piled up 196.50 points to second place Randall’s 129.

Versatile junior and three-sport athlete Brooklyn Kinsey had quite the two days. Kinsey opened the meet by getting her first of four gold medals in the long jump with a leap of 17-feet-3 3/4 inches.

Kinsey was far from done. She earned a silver in the triple jump (35-feet-7 inches) then came Thursday’s running finals.

Kinsey swept gold in both hurdles. Kinsey won the 100-meter hurdles by clocking a 15.60, and followed that with her third gold medal winning the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 45.9. Kinsey ended the meet as a part of Canyon’s stellar mile relay team that ran a 4:00.7 as the opening leg.

Teammate and University of Missouri signee Hannah Stuart went double gold in the 1600 and 3200-meter events. Stuart left the field behind in the 1600-meter run with a 4:59.9. She was also very impressive in the 3200-meter race with a time of 11:00.8 to win by 47 seconds.

The Pampa Lady Harvesters relay teams put themselves in the record books on Thursday. The 800-meter relay squad of Yahaira Zamudio, Berlin Bartlett, Briley Daniels and Katlyn Magers set a season-best gold medal time of 1:44.70. On top of that unreal performance the Lady Harvesters sprint relay team of that same foursome set another season-best time of 50.00 for another gold medal.

Like the Lady Eagles, the Canyon boys team also won the district title scoring 152 points to hold off Dumas which finished with 143.50.

The Eagles dominated the long-distance events led by Alex Niemiec. Niemiec went double gold winning the 800-meter run thanks to a time of 2:02.40 and took his second gold in the 1600-meter run with a 4:32. Teammate Lathan Lewter found the gold medal stand in the 3200-meter run pacing a 9:56.70.

Imanol Marquez of Dumas was impressive on Thursday. Marquez edged Canyon’s Carson Cockrell to win the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.0. He then helped the Demons win the mile relay as the anchor leg thanks to a time of 3:24.70 and was on the silver medal sprint relay squad.

West Plains high jumper Brycen Williams left his mark in a big way on Thursday. Williams popped off a leap of 6-foot-8 inches to win the event. Williams was a silver medalist at the UIL Class 4A state meet last season.

The 3-4A/ 4-4A Area meet is set for Thursday in Andrews.

District 1-3A

Canadian highlights district meet 

Running at Randall High School on Wednesday and Thursday, the Canadian track and field teams were able to make it a sweep of the District 1-3A championships with strong performances on both sides.

The Wildcats ran away with the district title piling up 224 points to Bushland’s 159.

Senior standout Preston Neumeier was incredible on both days for Canadian winning four gold medals and claiming a silver medal.

Neumeier broke his own school-record in the long jump leaping an impressive 23-feet-9 1/4 inches. Neumeier then made it a sweep in the jumping events winning the triple jump with a leap of 46-feet-3 1/2 inches.

During Thursday’s running, the senior kept his medal streak going. Neumeier took home his third gold in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.41. His fourth and final gold came on the days last race where Neumeier helped the Wildcats as the anchor leg win the mile relay clocking a 3:28.65.

The Canadian Lady Cats showed a strong team performance with 195 points to win the district championship and complete the sweep. Dalhart came in second with 147.5.

The Lady Cats were led by Konnar McClendon who won both the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:52, and the 1600-meter run thanks to a 5:29.92. Senior Samantha Krehbiel followed advancing in three events. Krehbiel helped the 800-meter relay team to a gold (1:47.68) and went to the silver medal stand in the sprint relay and 100-meter dash (11.98).

Bushland’s Leah Ruthardt was the highlight on the girls side. The Lady Falcons sprinter showed how fast she is setting two new school-records. Ruthardt won the 100-meter dash with a new record time of 11.93, in the 200-meter dash she set her second record blazing to a 24.93 and was a part of the Lady Falcons gold medal sprint relay team that clocked a 49.04.

In the District 2-3A meet, Taylor Wiseman of Childress continues her incredible career. The defending UIL Class 3A state champion discus thrower was absolutely dominating on Friday. Wiseman had a toss of 157-feet-8 inches for a gold. In the shot put, Wiseman also won that with ease with a 43-feet-9 1/2-inch throw.

The 1-3A/ 2-3A Area track and field meet is set for West Texas A&M on Friday.

District 1-2A

Gruver wins team titles  

The Gruver track and field teams both took home District 1-2A championships on Thursday and Friday in Gruver.

The Hounds tallied 205 points to claim the boys title while the Lady Hounds finished with 178 points.

Michael McCloy led the Greyhounds leaving the meet with heavy hardware. McCloy won four golds starting with the 110-meter hurdles with a 15.30 then earned a gold in the 300-meter hurdles with a 41.12. In the field events, the prolific pole vaulter won with a vault of 16-feet. His fourth gold came in the long jump with a leap of 20-feet-10 inches.

Stratford’s Bryce Braden swept the throwing events. The All-State quarterback popped off a throw of 180-feet-1 inch to win the discus and tossed a 48-6 for a gold in the shot put.

Booker’s Adrian Rosales won golds in all three distance events. Rosales won the 3200-meter (10:22.23), the 1600-meter (4:58.15) and the 800-meter run (2:07.37).

On the girls side, West Texas High’s Emorie McNabb had the speed to bring home a pair of gold medals. McNabb sprint to a 12.56 for the 100-meter dash gold and then had an impressive time of 25.64 for a win in the 200-meter dash.

Sunray’s do-it-all athlete Mia Gray is not only a standout on the softball diamond but is an elite thrower. Gray dominated those events tossing a 40-feet-7 1/4 inch to win the shot and then a 143-2 for a gold in the discus.

At the District 2-2A track and field meet, Wellington made it a sweep of the district championships at Wellington on Thursday.

The Skyrockets totaled 205 points with the Lady Skyrockets posting 145 points.

The 1-2A/ 2-2A Area track and field meet will be Wednesday at Wellington.

District 3-2A

Panhandle double golds at district 

Panhandle defended its home turf with a sweep of the District 3-2A championships in Panhandle on Thursday.

The Ettes scored 216 points to hold off Farwell’s 208. The Panthers dominated with 243 points.

The Ettes relay teams won all three relays and it started with the sprint relay of Ell Robinson, Carly Land, Makennah Austin and Leah Land that posted a time of 49.79. The 800-meter relay of Austin, Riley Segura, Lexi Durst and Leah Land clocked a 1:46.87 for a gold and the 1600-meter relay made up of Austin, Carly Land, Segura and Leah Land ran a 4:12.76 for the third gold.

Carly, a freshman, also won a gold in the 300-meter hurdles with a 46.58 and the pole vault event clearing 10-feet-6 inches.

On the boys side, Vega’s Diego Martinez racked up four gold medals. Martinez won the high jump at 6-feet-2 inches, then won the triple jump leaping 43-feet-6 inches and brought home gold by sweeping the hurdle events with a 15.40 in the 110-hurdles and a time of 41.84 in the 300-meter.

Boys Ranch’s Wetera Schlachter won two golds. Schlachter earned gold in the 800-meter run (2:01.98) and the 1600-meter race (5:01.46). Bovina’s Miguel Lopez was also impressive winning the 400-meter race clocking a 51.28 and led the Mustangs mile relay to the gold medal stand thanks to a 3:31.97.

The 3-2A/ 4-2A Area track and field meet is set for Thursday in Floydada.

Class 1A roundup 

District 1-1A/ 2-1A

The Follett boys and McLean girls won the District 1-1A championship on Wednesday in Miami.

The Panthers scored 170 points and the Lady Tigers posted 158.

Follett’s Julian Barton put on a show winning the 100-meter, 200-meter and 400-meter races. Barton clocked an 11.06 in the 100-meter dash, then a 22.66 in the 200-meter and closed his day out with a 52.46 in the 400-meter event.

In girls’ action, McLean swept all three relays. The Lady Tigers posted a time of 56.25 in the 400-meter relay, clocked a 1:59.84 in the 800-meter relay and a 4:32 in the mile relay.

At the District 2-1A track and field meet in White Deer on Wednesday, it was Silverton making it a sweep.

The Lady Owls totaled 173 points to edge White Deer’s 169. The boys score wasn’t as close as the Owls racked up 192 points with White Deer coming in second with 127.

Silverton’s Carlos Alanis and Sawyer Francis highlighted the meet. Alanis won the 100-meter dash with an 11.09 and claimed gold in the 200-meter dash with a 22.84. He also won the triple jump with a leap of 38-feet-3 1/2 inches.

Francis swept the hurdle events. Francis won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.77 then won the 300-meter with a 42.46. Francis earned his third trip to the gold medal stand leaping to a 20-feet-10 1/2-inch jump to win the long jump.

Alanis and Francis won their fourth gold together as part of the 800-meter relay team (1:36.06).

Brenna and Maddie Francis had a solid day for the Lady Owls. Brenna took home gold in the 100-meter hurdles thanks to a time of 15.90. She earned her second gold in the triple jump (34-0 1/2) and two silvers in the long jump and 300-meter hurdles.

Maddie won the 300-meter hurdles with a 48.02 and then took silver in the high jump (4-4). Maddie and Brenna both led Silverton to a gold in the 800-meter relay with a time of 1:54.68.

The 1-1A/ 2-1A Area Track and field meet is set for now on Tuesday in White Deer.

District 3-1A/ 4-1A

Wildorado swept the District 3-1A meet that was held on Tuesday in Vega.

The Mustangs scored 212 points which was 104 points better than Adrian’s 108. The Lady Mustangs dominated just the same with 240 points which was 142 points more than Texline (98).

Wildorado’s Darnell Braddek won double gold in the 200-meter (26.13) and the triple jump (36-4 1/4).

Giselle Esparza swept the hurdle events for Wildorado. Esparza won the 100-meter gold clocking a 15.86, then a 56.97 in the 300-meter race. She won two more gold medals in the field events. In the long jump Esparza leaped 15-8 1/2 for the gold and a 31-10 1/2 in the triple jump for the win.

In District 4-1A, the Happy boys tallied 222 points to win district while the Springlake-Earth girls won the team title with 104.

The 3-1A/ 4-1A Area track and field meet will be on Thursday in Tulia.
