Week 5 of the Texas High School football season is in the books with some teams from the Texas Panhandle and South Plains getting big wins and big individual performances. Check out recaps from Class 6A to Class 2A including Tascosa winning its district opener, Plainview stunning Lubbock-Cooper, Panhandle’s shutout of Wellington and Farwell winning a thriller against Post.
Frenship rolls over Midland Christian
The Frenship Tigers remained on a serious roll offensively Friday night.
Frenship hosted Midland Christian as the Tigers had their final tune-up prior to starting District 2-6A play. For the third straight game, they went over 40 points, as they cruised to a 41-13 victory.
Isaiah Gilliam had a big game catching the ball for Frenship (2-3) with four catches for 115 yards and two touchdowns. Braden Dunkerson also ran for two touchdowns.
Unlike the previous week’s 57-56 loss to Lubbock-Cooper, the Tigers also played some defense against Midland Christian, giving up only 233 total yards of offense.

Tascosa runs past Coronado
Tascosa lived up to type in its district opener on the road, as the Rebels ran their flexbone with brutal efficiency and scoring 37 points in the third quarter in a 65-28 win over Lubbock Coronado.
The Rebels (3-2, 1-0 in district) and Coronado (0-5, 0-1) were actually tied 28-28 at halftime as the two teams answered each other blow for blow. Tascosa’s Traeson Elliott ran for a 13-yard touchdown 100 seconds into the second half, then over a minute later, Krush Johnson returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown and the rout was on for the Rebels.
Tascosa ran for 507 yards as Reese Cabe led the way with 169 yards and a touchdown on only six carries.
Abilene High cruises by Caprock
It was a tough district start for Caprock at Dick Bivins Stadium, as Abilene High jumped out to a big early lead and didn’t let up to hand the Longhorns a 42-7 loss.
Abilene out gained Caprock (1-4, 0-1) by a 452-121 margin and took a 21-0 lead in the first quarter. John Rangel caught three touchdown passes in the first half and had five catches for 126 yards. Brayden Henry and Tristan Beal both threw two touchdown passes and Beal also ran for a score.
The Eagles (3-2, 1-0) had already scored all their points before Caprock got in the board in the third quarter on a 7-yard scoring pass from Juan De La Cruz to Canon Polivoda.
Plainview upsets Lubbock-Cooper
Plainview made a major statement to open district play, as the Bulldogs used a balanced offense to surprise Lubbock-Cooper 37-22 and throw their hat in the ring as a district contender.
The Bulldogs (3-2, 1-0) threw for 272 yards and ran for 261. Seth Mayberry threw three touchdown passes and ran for 181 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries. Jordan Porter had seven catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns.
In other district games, Abilene Wylie beat Wichita Falls Legacy 45-24 and Abilene Cooper beat Wichita Falls Memorial 42-27.
Canyon routs Piedra Vista
Canyon ended its predistrict schedule by playing rude hosts to their guests from New Mexico at Happy State Bank Stadium, as the Eagles soared to a 49-13 victory over Piedra Vista.
The Eagles (4-1) boasted a balanced offense as they piled up 552 yards and quarterback Brox Hacker was responsible for a lot of that. Hacker completed 12-of-15 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 102 yards on 14 carries. Bayler Schilling had four catches for 103 yards and a touchdown.
Liberty stays unbeaten by crushing Fort Stockton
The beat went on for second-year program Lubbock-Cooper Liberty on the road, as the Patriots destroyed Fort Stockton 56-0 to stay unbeaten on the season at 5-0.
Kaiden Joseph led Liberty’s attack by rushing for 106 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries, including two scores in the first quarter. Jamison Gonzalez ran for 91 yards and two touchdowns and Colton Bichard threw two touchdown passes.
Liberty gave up only 147 yards of offense.
Panhandle blanks Wellington in non-district showdown
Panhandle went on the road and made quite the statement during a highly regarded small school matchup getting a 41-0 shutout of previously unbeaten Wellington at Powell Field on Friday night.
Panhandle closes out its non-district schedule at 4-1 while the Skyrockets suffer their first loss on the year finishing the non-district at 4-1.
The Panthers took a stronghold on this contest from the jump and Wellington never recovered. On the opening possession, Panhandle marched down the field on a four-play, 76-yard drive resulting in a quarterback Broxton Robinson 42-yard score putting the Panthers up 7-0. On the ensuing possession it was Robinson finding the end zone again on a two-yard keeper making it 14-0. To close out the half, Robinson scored his third TD on a one-yard keeper as the Panthers took a dominating 21-0 lead into halftime.
Wellington had no answer for the West Point commit. Robinson was a mismatch going 7-of-8 for 138 yards with a touchdown and ran the ball 15 times for 143 yards with four scores. Lucas Purcell added 60 yards on the ground and Landen Krogh had a touchdown on 64 yards rushing.
Farwell stuns state-ranked Post
In one of the bigger upsets across the state Friday night, Farwell was able to score in the final minute to stun No. 2-ranked Post from Class 2A Division I giving the Steers a thrilling 25-24 victory at home.
The Antelopes (4-1), a state quarterfinalists last year, led 24-19 with just under a minute to play, however, Farwell (3-1) was driving. The Steers were able to capitalize on that final drive when quarterback Coy Miller called his own number scoring from four-yards out with 36 seconds left to give Farwell the upset.
The game-winning touchdown was the icing on the cake for Miller, who had a huge night all around. Miller led a huge passing night for Farwell going 19-of-32 for 275 yards with two TDs and one interception. He also used his feet to rush for 58 yards with another two scores. Teammate Andrae Pullen was his favorite target as Pullen caught seven passes for 111 yards with a touchdown. Joel Juarez added 72 yards on three receptions with a score of his own.
Canadian stays unbeaten making quick work of Sunray
The Canadian Wildcats stayed red-hot cruising past Sunray with a lopsided 69-20 win Friday night on Chris Koetting Field at Wildcats Stadium.
The Wildcats are now 5-0 on the year and will travel to Shallowater (4-1) to close out their non-district schedule next week. The Bobcats struggles continue falling to 0-5 on the year.
Canadian scored on every possession in the first half. In fact, dating back to the Wildcats game-winning drive against Dumas two weeks ago, Canadian scored on 21 straight possessions until the second half of the Sunray game.
Quarterback Weston Mitchell had a stellar game for Canadian as the sophomore was 14-of-18 for 245 yards with three touchdown passes. Running back Slayden Dickinson was back in the lineup after missing last week and made an immediate impact rushing for 167 yards on nine carries with three touchdowns, all of which were in the first half. Riggs Pennington led the receivers snagging four catches for 80 yards with a touchdown. Defensively, the Wildcats held Sunray to six yards rushing.
West Texas High runs past River Road
West Texas High closed out its non-district schedule unbeaten after blistering River Road 50-6 on Friday night at Comanches Stadium.
The Comanches finish out the non-district at a perfect 5-0 and will now enter a bye week. The Wildcats fall to 1-3 overall.
WT High put up 431 yards of offense Friday while limiting River Road to 141 yards. Quarterback Cayde Winters went 7-of-14 for 135 yards with three touchdowns and rushed for 158 yards on 14 carries with another three scores. Kelby Sherwood complimented Winters with 107 yards rushing on 17 carries with a TD and Zach Bryant hauled in three catches for 36 yards with a touchdown.
Week 5 quick hits
Spearman won its third straight game after an 0-2 start beating up Shamrock 68-14 at Lynx Stadium on Friday night. The Lynx move to 3-2 overall on the year. Shamrock is still looking for its first win falling to 0-5. Quarterback Jailen Vasquez was 5-of-5 for 98 yards with two scores. Dallen Scroggs had a 45-yard interception return for a touchdown and ran for 40 yards with another TD. Teammate Landon Sonnenberg had two interception returns for touchdowns of 62 and 35 yards.
Dalhart had no issues in Week 5 blanking Borger 45-0 on Friday night. The Golden Wolves move to 4-1 overall while Borger is 0-5. Hunter Trusler went 14-of-17 got 240 yards passing with three touchdowns. He also rushed for 55 yards. Teammate Talon Garcia caught two touchdown passes.
It was a dominating night for the Wheeler Mustangs after earning a 40-0 shutout at Sanford-Fritch on Friday night. Quarterback Creed Newkirk led the Mustangs going 8-of-13 passing for 104 yards with a pair of touchdowns. Teammate Chris Gallardo rushed for 107 yards on 13 carries with two TDs. Wheeler is now 3-1 on the year. The Eagles slip to 3-2.
The Stratford Elks made a long road trip well worth it getting a 40-20 win at Lubbock Trinity on Friday. The Elks move to 4-1 overall on the season. Chase Lantelme had a every efficient night going 9-of-14 for 128 yards passing with a pair of touchdowns, added a rushing score and had a pick six of 78 yards. Darius Jones caught five passes for 95 yards and Kooper Walden added an interception return for a touchdown. Alejandro Casas led the Elks with 19 tackles.
Briggs Satterfield was on fire against Guymon, Okla., which helped the Greyhounds to a 61-6 home win Friday night. The senior dual-threat QB went 11-of-12 passing for 159 yards with four touchdown tosses. Dax Conyers had 23 yards with two scores while his brother, Quinn, made five tackles with an INT and added 42 yards on four carries. Bo Cowan had six tackles with a pair of sacks and Manny Valverde carried the rock seven times for 48 yards with a touchdown. The Greyhounds improve to 4-1 overall.
The Hale Center Owls did allow their first touchdown in two games but still picked up a convincing 62-8 victory over Floydada. The Owls (4-1) piled up 488 yards of offense to the Whirlwinds 96. Carter Gonzalez led the offensive attack with 271 yards passing and five touchdowns. Jeremiah Guerrero caught four passes for 112 yards with two TDs and Ryan Mesquite added three receiving scores.
Abernathy stayed hot with a road win at Friona 34-21 on Friday night. The Antelopes (3-2) saw Caden Bird catch nine passes for 143 yards with a two touchdowns. Quarterback Jagger Wiley went 19-of-27 for 269 yards with three touchdown passes. Despite the loss, Friona’s (2-3) Iram Gonzalez had 18 carries for 89 yards with two TDs.
Littlefield is 5-0 for the first time since 2008 after beating Brownfield 42-21 on Friday night. The Wildcats destroyed the Cubs on the ground with 392 of their 443 yards coming from the ground attack. Sammy Saenz paced that strong running game with 22 carries for 154 yards and a score. Teammate Blayton Soliz tacked on 124 yards rushing on 21 carries with a TD.
Bovina snapped a two-game losing skid with a 24-8 against Smyer on Friday night. The Mustangs push their record to 2-2 on the season. Angel Lara had a big effort with 18 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown. Xavier Garcia added 71 yards with a TD of his own.
In a wild one in the Big Country, Clyde outlasted Muleshoe 54-49. The Mules now drop to 2-3 on the season. Bulldog quarterback Devon Wright threw for 236 yards with five touchdowns. Josue Sigala did have a big night for Muleshoe rushing for 231 yards on 20 totes with five scores. Sigala also threw for 105 yards with another TD.
Lamesa used a big second half to tame Tulia 42-7 on Thursday night. Lamesa quarterback Daniel Ramos was 19-of-29 for 234 yards and two TDs. Running back DeeV Lugo led the Tornadoes with 202 yards rushing on 15 carries and scored three times.
New Home is now 4-1 rolling by Roscoe 30-3 Lincoln Preston had three touchdowns for the Leopards. Parker Liles forced a fumble that was returned by Avin Madrid for a touchdown.
In a few other scores from Week 5, Lubbock Christian blanked New Deal 43-0, Lockney knocked off Clarendon 30-16, Olton shutout Vega 28-0 and Wichita Falls City View defeated Childress 52-27.
