Kurt Haberthur is headed home.

Haberthur, a Perryton graduate, has been named as the new athletic director and head football coach of the Rangers program, approved during a Perryton school board meeting Thursday night.

“Going home to me is something special,” Haberthur said. “Perryton is an amazing place to me. I grew up there, and started my coaching career there. I hope now I can end my career in Perryton.”

The veteran coach is no stranger to running his own program. Haberthur, 44, spent seven seasons as the athletic director and head football coach at Sunray from 2011-2017, amassing a 43-28 overall record, while making five playoff appearances.

After resigning from Sunray, Haberthur took an opportunity as an assistant coach Amarillo High the past two seasons under head football coach Chad Dunnam.

“It’s a great feeling to be head coaching again,” said Haberthur, who coached offensive lineman the past two years at AHS. “When I left Sunray I knew I needed to work on me.

Going from a head coach to assistant was great experience.

“Some coaches can’t swallow their ego to do it,but for me Amarillo High was huge. We were a tight-knit coaching staff, and working with Jason Pillion in basketball taught me a lot about culture.”

I can’t wait to take the knowledge I learned and put my own spin on it at Perryton.”
