Star Cortes, Dumas softball, Sr.
On the diamond: Behind the play of Cortes and a talented senior class, the Dumas Demonettes are off to a strong start on the season and a perfect 4-0 in District 4-4A. Cortes had quite the past week in the circle throwing two straight shutouts against Randall and Borger. In the 10-0 win against Randall, Cortes worked all five innings without allowing a run, scattering seven hits with a pair of strikeouts. In an 11-0 blanking of Borger, Cortes was masterful, throwing a five-inning perfect game, racking up a total of 11 K’s.
On the season, the senior is 12-2 in the circle, boasting a 2.00 ERA and has a total of 53 strikeouts. She can also do damage at the dish, hitting .448 on the year to go with six home runs and 21 RBIs.
Coach Carlyn Tolleson: “We are playing very well right now, and that’s because we have a veteran team full of seniors and juniors that are so encouraging. There is a ton of experience on this team and everyone holds each other accountable. Star is a big-time leader for us and has been since she has been on varsity. She gets a lot of praise as a pitcher, which she should, but it doesn’t matter where we put her, she can do it all. She’s also a great hitter and anytime she is on the field she gives us a chance to win. You don’t see many competitors like Star.”
Cortes: “We’re off to a very strong start and that’s because of our big senior class. We’ve all played a ton of games together and everyone on this team wants to win. Right now, I feel like I’m playing at a very high level. I’m throwing the ball well, and this year I feel I’m mentally stronger than I’ve ever been. I don’t let the little things bother me, and I’m playing with a lot of confidence.”
