Izzabella Slover, Spearman golf, Fr.
On the course: Behind the fantastic play of Slover and her teammates, the Spearman Lynxettes won their first regional championship in 50 years and qualified as a team for the first time since 1990 at the Region I-2A golf tournament last week at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course.
On top of the historic team title, the freshman Slover won the individual regional championship shooting rounds of 80 and 81 for a 161. Slover also led the Lynxettes to the District 1-3A championship a few weeks ago scoring a 36-hole total of 159. Slover shot an 82 at the Pheasant Trails Golf Course in Dumas and a 77 at the Phillips Golf Course in Borger.
Coach Chad Wilkerson: “I wasn’t coaching football this year and that gave us more time to focus on the team and we had an earlier start. We knew with the freshman we had coming in on top of the veterans we had a team that could be something special. This group has fought through weather and has taken the time to practice. Not just play 18-holes everyday but work on parts of their game that matters most. They have shown so much dedication. Izzy has worked hard and been pushed by her family. She just turned 15 recently so to watch how clutch she is, is truly incredible. She is great off the tee, she has a strong short game, and she is always composed.
Slover: “It was an unreal feeling to be playing at regional and to win the region. I’ve been playing golf since I was 8-years old and I’ve won tournaments before but this felt different. It was like an entire different level. We did this all together as a team. We are all best friends and love playing with one another. It was incredible to win the individual title also. Going into the 17th hole I trailed by one stroke. I piped a drive on No. 17 and that gave me the confidence to go on and eagle the final hole to win. The entire team celebrated with me after; it was so cool.”
