On the court: Gruver’s Carter Holloway opened eyes across the Texas Panhandle and especially Region I-2A with her play in singles competition last week which resulted in a ticket punched to the UIL Class 2A state tennis tournament for the first time in her career. Using her loud forehand and grit, the senior won a hard-fought match against Chelsea Muniz of Wink with a 7-6 (5), 7-5 win to avenge a loss to Muniz from last.

This is just part of an impressive tennis career for Holloway, who is a two-time district singles champion and a three-time regional qualifier.

Coach Wade Callaway: “Carter showed a lot of toughness, and she is an easy person to root for. She didn’t even have a seed last year but won a match and was determined to get even farther this year. Carter earned a No. 3-seed heading into regionals this time around and was able to beat the girl from Wink. Carter is the type of young person that has tremendous character, and she knows how to win.”

Holloway: “It means so much to me to be able to advance to the state tournament. I didn’t play tennis until I moved to Gruver my sophomore year. I’ve fallen and love with tennis and I just want to keep my expectations high and use my mental toughness at state to compete and see if I can come home with a medal.”
