Dumas girls, Canyon boys highlight first day of Region I Cross Country Meet

The Texas Panhandle shined on day one of the UIL Region I Cross Country Meet at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock on Monday. Here’s a recap of the Region I-4A and Region I-2A team winners and individual qualifiers. The Region I-5A, I-3A, I-1A meet takes place on Tuesday.

Region I-4A

The Dumas girls and Canyon boys each brought home team championships during the Region I-4A Cross Country Meet on Monday.

In a race dominated by District 4-4A, it was the Demonettes (63 points) holding off rivals Randall (67 points) and Canyon (75 points) to claim the programs first regional championship in 40 years. Sanger took the fourth and final spot with 79 points.

Sarai Chavez paced Dumas on the very difficult and hilly 2-mile course placing sixth overall with a time of 12:15.8. Teammates Mia Lujan (12:23.4) and Yahaira Lujan (12:25.9) finished in the top 10 coming in ninth and 10th respectfully.

As usual, tradition-rich Canyon had a fantastic showing with Avery Brown winning the Region I-4A individual championship clocking a gold medal time of 11:43.1, followed by teammate Abree Winfrey with a silver medal performance of 11:57.4. Randall standout Sierra Sanchez was fourth overall (12:07.4) with teammate Hailey Roberson following in fifth (12:10.8).

The Canyon boys dominated like they have all season scoring 24 points to pummel second place Big Spring which had 71 points.

The Eagles had five runners place in the top 10 led by their strongest runner Alex Niemiec coming in second individually to earn a silver medal clocking an impressive time of 15:37.6, coming in mere tenths of second behind regional champion Christopher Moreno of San Elizario who ran a 15:37.1. Rounding out the top 10 for Canyon was Lewter Lathan coming in third place (15:43.0), Triston Cano in fourth (15:44.2), Ryan Fernandez placed seventh (16:11.6) and Anthony Stuart took eighth with a 16.22.5. Noah Williams of Dumas (16:56.3) and Hereford’s Angel Garcia (16:59.7) also qualified for the state meet as individuals.

Region I-2A

The Gruver and Panhandle girls’ team both finished in the top four at the Region I-2A meet in Lubbock on Monday, while on the boys’ side Booker took the fourth and final spot to advance to the UIL Class 2A state meet.

The Gruver Lady Hounds placed second as a team with 130 points with Panhandle finishing closely behind in third with 132 points. Christoval was the Region I-2A team champion thanks to 85 points and New Deal came in fourth (135).

Gruver senior and Oklahoma State basketball commit Brenna Butler led Gruver on the 2-mile course running a time of 12:59.1 to place fourth. Panhandle’s Avery Cathey was 10th overall to pace the Ettes clocking a 13:15.9. Individually, Farwell’s Isabelle Jaime had a superb meet finding the silver medal stand placing second overall to punch her ticket to state with a 12:41.2. Analley Moreno of Plains was the regional champion (12:34.0). Bovina’s Faith Gonzales also qualified as an individual taking 16th place overall (13:25.5).

Booker was the highlight of the boys meet as the only Texas Panhandle team to advance to state. Adrian Rosales ran a great race for the Kiowas with a fifth-place individual mark of 17:40.0. Memphis runner Ryder Robinson is headed to state as an individual taking fourth individually with a great time of 17:27.9, and Gruver’s Nico Martinez also qualified (18:10.0).

Result information
