District 4-4A boys basketball roundup – Canyon takes down West Plains in opener, Perryton’s Julian Cervantes has huge night

Canyon soars past West Plains in 4-4A opener

The Canyon Eagles picked up where they left off last year by opening District 4-4A with a win getting past rival West Plains 47-35 at home on Tuesday night.

After a very difficult non-district schedule, the Eagles improve to 6-7 overall and 1-0 in the district. West Plains falls to 8-6, 0-1.

The Eagles took control going up eight by halftime and building that lead into double-digits in the second half.

Gage Lunsford and Kelson Jones were key for Canyon in the victory totaling 26 points with each going for 13 points apiece. The Wolves were led by Wiley Killham’s 11 points.

Randall racks up the points in win over Dumas 

The Randall Raiders opened the game hot and never looked back coming three points away from the century mark in a one-sided win over Dumas 97-54 on the road Tuesday.

The Raiders opened the game with a 24-point first quarter pushing that spread to 52 points by halftime to take a 52-28 advantage. Balanced scoring was the key for the Raiders with Devin Baccus going for a game-high 23 points followed by Tayesen Combs with 15 and Jaxon Toniolli putting in 13. Dumas’ Blake Robinson and Peyton Powers each scored eight in the loss.

Randall pushes its overall record to 13-2 overall and 1-0 in District 4-4A. The Demons drop to 12-4, 0-1.

Hereford hustles past Pampa 

Hereford went on the road and came away with a key victory to open up 4-4A play knocking off Pampa by a convincing 56-33 count on Tuesday evening.

Hereford jumped all over the Harvesters taking a 15-4 first quarter lead only to see Pampa battle back cutting the deficit at 25-20 by halftime. However, the second half belonged to the Whitefaces as they outscored Pampa 31-13 over the final 16 minutes.

Tyi Duque registered a game-high 13 points for Hereford with teammates Brylyn Lopez and Ethan Gonzales each scoring nine. Pampa’s Hector Villanueva had a team-high nine.

Hereford (10-3) improves to 1-0 in District 4-4A. Pampa (9-4) falls to 0-1 in district.

Cervantes lights up Borger in district opening victory 

Behind a massive performance from senior Julian Cervantes, the Perryton Rangers were able to open up District 4-4A in a very positive way taking down Borger 78-41 on the road Tuesday night.

Cervantes was simply hard for the Bulldogs to defend putting up a career-high 41 points including 14 in the opening frame. Cervantes was complimented by two other teammates in double-digits with Gordo Estrada scoring 17 and Cooper Schilling chipping in with 16. Borger senior leader KJ Jennings scored 17 in defeat.

The Rangers improve to 7-4 overall and 1-0 in District 4-4A. Borger’s struggles continue at 1-12 overall and 0-1 in the league.
