Chicken Fried Chicken and Texas Tunes
Coach Winfrey’s game day traditions are as unique as his coaching style. Watching Lonesome Dove and enjoying a pre-game meal from Feldman’s—complete with chicken fried chicken, fries, Caesar salad, and extra gravy—are staples of his routine.
His hidden talent for playing guitar isn’t much of a secret to his players, but it’s a skill that adds to his down-to-earth personality.
In his office, you’ll find a playlist featuring The Great Divide, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Def Leppard, Alice in Chains, and plenty of Texas country music—an eclectic mix that reflects his love for the 80s, 90s, and all things Texan.
Coaching with Heart and Hustle
Coach Winfrey’s coaching philosophy is rooted in love, family, and hard work. He believes, “Over-achievers rule the world,” and his motto demonstrates his commitment to building trust and connection with his players.
“Love is better than fear.”
For him, both film study and field practice are equally important, and his favorite drill, 7-on-7, highlights his focus on teamwork and precision. Sports have taught him that success comes from effort and grit, and he strives to instill these values in his team every day.

A Community That Feels Like Home
For Coach Winfrey, the best part of coaching in Canyon is the family atmosphere. Having lived in the community for half his life, he’s grateful for the way the town has embraced his family and helped raise his four daughters.
Canyon’s strong sense of community and support makes it a special place to coach, and it’s this bond that fuels his passion for the game.
Whether it’s under the Friday night lights or in the locker room, Coach Winfrey is dedicated to creating a culture of love, leadership, and over-achievement.
