Palo Duro edges Caprock for first win
In a crosstown showdown for eastside pride, not the mention the first win of the season, the Palo Duro Dons left Dick Bivins Stadium the happiest Friday night.
With both teams seeking to get into the win column, Palo Duro came out on top, using a strong defense to thwart Caprock and come out with a 20-14 win. PD is now 1-1 on the season while Caprock is 0-2.
The Dons ran for two touchdowns in the first quarter to take an early lead and the defense did the rest from there. Sophomore quarterback Darien Lewis ran for a game-high 119 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries and also had a goal line interception late in the game to preserve the win.
Defensively, linebacker Ali Hopson had a big game for the Dons, making a total of 16 tackles. Lewis and A.J. Randle each had an interception.
Caprock running back Jaymuarie Johnson carried the ball 16 times for 52 yards with a score.
Amarillo High edges Cleveland, N.M.
Under less than auspicious circumstances, the Amarillo High Sandies passed a major character test to notch their first win of the season.
Playing under different rules at Rio Rancho, N.M. against defending state champion Cleveland, Amarillo High compensated with a big performance from sophomore quarterback Jett Lopez. Subbing for injured Will Flaming, Lopez threw two touchdown passes to Rylan Leathers in the fourth quarter to force overtime, then Lopez scored the winning points on a sneak in OT to give the Sandies their first win of the season, 28-27.
Trailing 14-0 at halftime, Jaylend Brashears got AHS (1-1) going by returning the second half kickoff for a touchdown. The Sandies still trailed in the fourth quarter, but Lopez hit Leathers on 6 and 9-yard scoring passes, the latter of which tied it 21-21 with 35 seconds left to play.
Lopez, who completed 13-of-19 passes for 172 yards, scored in overtime to give AHS a 28-21 lead. Cleveland answered back with a touchdown to cut it to 28-27 and opted to go for two, but Leathers made the tackle on the conversion to seal the win.
Cooper Manning had five catches for 100 yards for Amarillo High.
Tascosa routed by Midland Legacy
For the second straight week, and Amarillo ISD school fell victim to a big second quarter by Midland Legacy, as Legacy scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter to overtake Tascosa en route to a 63-24 victory.
Tascosa (1-1) took a 13-7 lead in the first quarter, as Coltyn Fulton and Jaden King both took fumbles in for scores. T.J. Tillman also returned an interception 64 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.
In between, though, Legacy (2-0) scored 28 straight points to take control of the game. Legacy had a balanced offense with 648 yards, and Damien Johnson and Madden Milloy both ran for over 100 yards.
Tascosa’s Andrew Merrell ran for 141 yards on only six carries, including an 80-yard touchdown run.
Class 4A
Canyon outlasts Perryton in shootout
Canyon’s offense was in high gear for the second straight week and needed to be, as the Eagles soared to an early lead and held on to beat Perryton 42-34 at Happy State Bank Stadium.
The Eagles (2-0) were balanced offensively, but Sam Johnson carried the biggest load on the ground, running for 132 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries. Canyon ran for 308 yards and had 467 total.
Perryton (0-2) fought back, as Julian Cervantes completed 17-of-23 for 205 yards and four touchdowns. Frank Jimenez ran for 119 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries and Britt Blackshear caught two touchdown passes.
Randall scores first win at Clovis
Randall’s offense was in high gear at Clovis, N.M., as the Raiders rolled to a 50-23 win to give coach Dan Sherwood his first win at Randall.
The Raiders (1-1) had a balanced attack, as Dylan Ray led the way by running for 128 yards and four touchdowns on 11 carries. Tryston Sanchez threw two touchdown passes to Kaison Benton to lead the passing attack.
Clovis (0-3) remained winless after losing to a Canyon ISD school for the second straight week, falling 43-15 at Canyon in the previous game.
West Plains crushes Greenwood
The West Plains Wolves kept up their prolific offensive ways and got a win out of it, as they headed south to the Permian Basin and routed Greenwood 59-14.
Reid Macon completed 27-of-33 for 275 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Wolves (1-1), who scored 41 in losing at Bushland last week. Jordi Hernandez ran for 185 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries as West Plains piled up 593 yards of offense.
Hereford beats Wichita Falls in wild one
Hereford jumped out to an early lead over Wichita Falls and held on, as the Whitefaces won 45-40 to stay undefeated and double their win total from all of last season.
The Herd (2-0) took a 21-0 lead on three Kalub Ramirez touchdown passes. Ramirez was 13-of-22 for 207 yards and four touchdowns.
Brylyn Lopez was a tremendous complement on the ground, running for 215 yards and two touchdowns on 34 carries while also catching a touchdown pass.
Dumas and Pampa fall
The tough times continued against Lubbock area schools at home to open the season for Dumas, as the Demons lost to Lubbock Estacado 49-16 to fall to 0-2.
Estacado (2-0) opened the game with 42 unanswered points, as Bobby Ross ran for 209 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, leading a rushing attack which gouged Dumas for 331 yards. The Matadors were almost as good throwing the ball, as D.J. Johnson completed 13-of-22 passes for 311 yards anf four touchdowns, and Cedric Ross had six catches for 157 yards and two scores.
James Coaly and Eduardo Hernandez both scored touchdowns for the Demons.
Pampa suffered the same fate as Dumas, falling at Plainview 35-7 on Friday night.
The Harvesters move to 1-1 on the year. Despite the loss, Aaron Diaz led Pampa catching two passes for 64 yards.
