Big second half soars Bushland past Canadian in big time showdown 

In a big-time matchup with state-wide attention in the Class 3A ranks, the Bushland Falcons gained a measure of revenge from a year ago pulling away from Canadian with a big second half for a 42-21 win at a packed Falcons Stadium on Friday night.

The loss snaps Canadian’s 18-game regular season win streak dating back to 2022.

The first half saw the game tied 14-14 with inside a minute to halftime, Bushland turned the momentum with 21 unanswered points starting with quarterback Quaid Ferris hitting a quick strike to Jenner King on a 47-yard touchdown giving the Falcons a 21-14 lead into halftime.

The Falcons (2-0) carried that momentum into the third quarter scoring on their opening two possessions. Bushland went up 28-14 on a 2-yard plunge by Slade Perry set up by a 49-yard pass and catch from Ferris to Max Rodriguez.

After a quick Canadian (1-1) three-and-out, Bushland was in total control with another score this time on a 5-yard run by Colton Reynolds to paydirt giving the Falcons their biggest lead 35-14.

Ferris was superb going 16-of-19 with two touchdowns. King caught six passes for 109 yards with a TD. On the defensive side, linebacker Jaxon Fetsch had 15 tackles with a sack.

Canadian was led by quarterback Clay Kendall’s 286 yards passing with a touchdown. Julian Dominguez had a big outing with 10 catches for 91 yards.

Muleshoe beats Lamesa in shootout 

In a game that saw a combined 116 points, the Muleshoe Mules exploded offensively during a wild 74-42 win at Lamesa on Friday night.

The Mules stay unbeaten at 2-0 on the year while the Tors fall to 0-2.

Muleshoe’s offense clicked the entire 48 minutes scoring 52 points by half and finishing the game with 580 total yards.

Sophomore Josue Sigala had himself a game. On offense, Sigala paced the ground attack chewing up 154 yards rushing on only eight carries with three TDs. Sigala had an 82-yard kickoff return tallying 352 all-purpose yards. On defense, Sigala did his job making nine tackles.

Quarterback Nathan Martens picked apart the Lamesa defense with a prolific throwing effort. The senior gunslinger was extremely efficient going 26-of-30 for 335 yards with five touchdown passes.

Martens connected his main weapon Yahir Quezada as the receiver snagged 14 catches for 149 yards with a TD. Teammate Mauricio Herrera was a mismatch for Muleshoe torching the secondary with eight catches for 154 yards finding the endzone three times.

Dalhart mashes Perryton 

Everything that went right for Perryton in a Week 1 win over Canyon went the complete opposite during Week 2.

The Dalhart Golden Wolves hit the Rangers (1-1) in the mouth early taking control in the second quarter cruising to a 59-21 victory at Golden Wolves Stadium on Friday.

However, the win didn’t come without a loss for Dalhart as senior leader and the heart and soul of the Golden Wolves in quarterback Kyler Read suffered a severe leg injury in the fourth quarter.

Before that injury, Read and the Dalhart offense got clicking in the first quarter which was the start of five straight scoring possessions.

The Golden Wolves (2-0) took the lead forget midway through the first quarter on a 3-yard keeper from Read putting Dalhart up 7-0. After a Talon Garcia interception, Colt Carnesecca took a speed option for an 11-yard score extending the advantage at 14-0.

To open the second quarter and put the game out of reach, Read then connected a deep ball to Caden Bird on a 54-yard pitch and catch that gave the Golden Wolves a commanding 21-0 lead.

Before his injury, Read was 20-of-27 for 295 yards with five touchdown passes. He’d also punched Perryton in the mouth with his legs piling up 153 yards on 10 carries with another score.

On top of his interception, Garcia caught three passes for 58 yards with two TDs.

Week 2 quick hits

  • The Childress Bobcats broke into the win column for the first time in 2024 with a convincing 35-6 victory at Breckenridge on Friday night. The Bobcat (1-1) defense limited the Buckaroos to 78 total yards forcing five turnovers. Offensively, Kobe Sims rushed for 115 yards on 14 carries with two scores.
  • River Road is off to a 2-0 start to the year going on the road and taming Tulia 29-13. Quarterback Alex Warren was the difference for the Wildcats chewing up 171 yards on 10 carries finding the endzone three times.
  • It was an impressive performance for Spearman as the Lynx bounced back from a loss to Gruver getting a 40-0 shutout on the road at Friona on Friday. Spearman crushed the Chieftains on the ground running for a combined 416 yards. JP Carbajal led the way with 144 yards on 21 carries and a touchdown.
  • Dimmitt suffered its first loss of the year falling to Olton 55-0.
