Caprock girls win Lady Horn’s Classic; Byron Nelson’s Basham impresses

The Caprock girls wrestling team held off El Paso Franklin to claim the team title of the prestigious 20th Lady Horn’s Classic on Saturday afternoon at Caprock High School.

Caprock scored 257.5 points over the two days, and claimed two individual champions from the gold bracket during Saturday’s finals.

Hereford finished fourth overall with 188.5 points, Randall tied for sixth with Byron Nelson, totaling 161, and Palo Duro placed eighth with 146 team points.

Caprock’s Tatiana Garcia and Vienna Barbosa dominated in their respective championship matches, winning by pinfall.

Garcia took the 119 pound title by defeating Journey Ruiz of Chatfield, Colo., via a pinfall in 1:56.

Barbosa followed her teammates to earn the 165 pound championship with a pinfall of Hereford’s Desiree Sanchez in 2:43.

Caprock wasn’t the only Amarillo-area school to claim individual titles. Mia Diaz of Tascosa beat Caprock’s Audree Garcia in a 14-3 decision to earn the 95 pound championship, and Randall’s Jaryn Ortegon won a 6-2 decision over Caprock’s Vanessa Macedo in the 110.

Byron Nelson’s Basham dominates at Lady Horn’s Classic

Fans in attendance were able to see one of the top female wrestlers in the country.

Byron Nelson senior Lexie Basham, who is ranked second nationally in the 138 pound division by USA Wrestling, was dominant Saturday. Basham used an impressive double leg takedown that resulted in a pin of Prosper’s Taylor Martinez at the 3:09 mark.

Basham went 7-0 at the Lady Horn’s Classic and is now 42-0 overall. Over the past four years, the highly talented Basham has a combined record of 179-7, winning back-to-back UIL Class 6A state championships.
