Lyric Smith, Clarendon football, Sr.
On the field: The Broncos senior leader is having a tremendous season that continue to build during a 36-20 victory at Wellington to help Clarendon claim the outright District 2-2A Division II championship. Smith showed just how dynamic he can be with the ball in his hands on every play offensively, going 12-of-20 for 318 yards passing with three touchdowns, then tacking on 90 yards on 21 carries with two more scores. But it’s his defense that’s equally amazing. Smith totaled 19 tackles in the win over the Skyrockets, 10 of those solo with two for a loss and a pick.
On the season, Smith has broken the 1,000-yard mark posting 1,024 yards rushing this year with 17 touchdowns and has thrown for 925 yards with eight more TDs. Defensively, Smith has made an incredible eight interceptions with 54 tackles.
Coach Aaron Wampler: “I’m unbelievably proud of these guys. We started the year 0-3 and never gave up or quit fighting. Against Wellington, we had tremendous effort and we executed like we needed to throughout the game to get that win and a district championship. Lyric is a huge reason for that and our success. He’s a ballhawk on defense and on offense, he is so electric he can score at any moment. He has a great mindset, his work ethic is incredible, and he’s just been a special player for this team.”
Smith: “It really mean a lot to myself and my teammates to win that district championship and beat Wellington. I’m just so proud of this team and we way we executed in that game and the energy we played with. I think for me, things have changed a lot this year. I’ve battled injuries but now I’ve really gotten into a flow. I’m more of a leader now and that’s because I learned from some great guys that came before me who knew how to win. I just love this team and we want to keep competing as long as we can.”
