In the ring: While there were many great performances at last weekends Canyon Invitational Track and Field meet, none stole the headlines, like the performance from Eagle senior Kelton Burgoon. The discus standout not only made Texas Panhandle news, but made statewide news by uncorking a toss of 201-feet-8 inches. That mark is not only shatters Burgoon’s personal-best, but as it stands, is the new school-record, the best throw in all classifications across Texas, as well as the top throw in the entire country.

Burgoon will compete at the Randall Raider Track and Field meet Friday afternoon.

Coach Matt Spears: “His throw of 201-feet is the top of any classification in Texas and as of now the best in the country. It’s so awesome to see, because Kelton works extremely hard every single day to get better. He is extremely consistent in his lifting and he has never missed a practice. I remember his freshman year, he has throwing around 112-feet. He had this pride on his face that he just wanted to learn and get better, and I could tell he was going to be special. He throws all year around and is one of the most coachable kids I’ve ever had. He is a student of his craft and works on his technique all the time. He takes ownership in what he does and he’s just an awesome young man.”

Burgoon: “It was pretty cool to hit 200-feet. I didn’t really throw the disc very well on my first three throws, but on that fourth throw, I was able to get it out there, and it felt really good. I couldn’t believe it when I heard the mark. Hitting 200-feet has been a dream of mine since I was a freshman, and it motivates me to just keep improving and do better. I am putting in the time and working on my strength in the weight room. I want to keep being consistent and working as hard as I can to keep getting better.”
