On the court: Though Texline’s fantastic season came to an end Monday at the hands of Jayton in the state semifinals, it didn’t stop Clay from having a strong week to help get the Tornadoes one game away from a state championship. The senior leader was dominant against Lorenzo and Nazareth last week. Against Lorenzo, Clay put up 15 points to go with eight assists and three rebounds. In a blowout over Nazareth, Clay tallied 19 points with seven assists, four steals and four boards.

Clay ended his season pouring in 19.4 points a game averaging 4.8 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 2.4 steals. He also shot 89 percent from the free-throw line.

Coach Coby Beckner: “Joe is a mature and he’s like having another coach on the floor. He handles a lot of situations well and he’s a guy we trust. He studies the game and is a tremendous leader. He understands what leadership is and that’s what makes him a great teammate. The game didn’t come natural to Joe but he’s a competitor and has studied and worked. He was always motivated to be one of the best.”

Clay: “It’s been amazing to be part of this program. I’ve been in it since I was in sixth grade and I’ve been blessed to learn so much from some great players and my coaches. My biggest thing was always staying in the gym and trusting the process. It’s nice to see the work pay off.”
