The Amarillo Sod Poodles carried on their hot play coming off the Major League Baseball All-Star break opening a nine-game road trip on the right foot taking two-of-three games in San Antonio over the weekend.

It was the pitching that set the tone for the Sod Poodles thanks to 18 scoreless innings to open the series with a pair of wins before a shutout defeat in Sunday’s finale to the Missions. Amarillo dominated the first two games of the series against San Antonio getting a 5-0 shutout Friday followed by a 6-0 blanking of the Missions on Saturday. San Antonio was able to avoid the sweep returning the favor to Amarillo with a 2-0 shutout Sunday.

As of right now, the Sod Poodles (44-45 on the season) are 12-9 and lead the second half of the Texas League’s South Division by a game over San Antonio (11-10). Amarillo continues its road trip opening a six-game series against Corpus Christi starting Tuesday night.

Jose Cabrera took the ball and set the tone for Amarillo on Friday night with his command on the hill. Cabrera handcuffed Missions hitter over seven innings allowing only one hit with five strikeouts to earn the victory improving to 5-3 on the year. Shortstop Jose Cabrera provided the pop at the plate going 3-for-5 including a double and triple to finish the game with three RBIs.

Roman Angelo followed Cabrera’s effort Saturday night with a strong start of his own. Angelo was masterful on the bump tossing six innings scattering two hits without allowing a run to get the win. Arizona Diamondback top prospect Tommy Troy delivered offensively with a two-run double.

Before being blanked Sunday, the Amarillo offense was consistent totaling 20 hits over the two games on Friday and Saturday. Troy was 3-for-7 in those two games.
