Amarillo High, Randall and Canyon are still standing in UIL team tennis playoffs

Three area team tennis squads advanced to the regional quarterfinals this week and there’s not much surprise in who those teams are.

Amarillo High, Randall and Canyon are tennis stalwarts and that has proved out through the first two rounds of play.

Amarillo High, competing in Class 5A, has rolled over its first two opponents. The Sandie netters beat Wichita Falls Memorial in bi-district play and El Paso Bel Air in the area round, 10-0.

Despite that domination, don’t expect that type of score in the regional quarterfinals. The Sandies are ranked sixth in the state but they matchup with No. 5-ranked Abilene Wylie.  Wylie and Amarillo High are the top two teams in Region 1-5A with the winner of this one having a legitimate shot at making the UIL state tournament.

The two squads face off at 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning at the Lubbock High School Tennis Courts.

In Class 4A, Randall is looking to make three straight appearances at the state tournament and the early playoff results look favorable for that happening.

The Raiders beat Graham 19-0 in the opening round and took out Brock 10-1 at area.

The No. 2-ranked Raiders now meet No. 14 Vernon at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in Plainview.

Canyon had little trouble with Iowa Park, knocking them off 10-2. In the Area round, the Eagles pulled off a solid win over No. 6-ranked Peaster 10-6 win.

With those two big wins, No. 3-ranked Canyon advances to the regional quarterfinals to battle Burkburnett. The Bulldogs recently took down West Plains, 11-6, in the bi-district round. Canyon and Burkburnett meet up at noon on Tuesday at Lubbock-Cooper High School.
