3 things that happened on Friday night

Amarillo High looks strong in District 3-5A opener

The No. 3-ranked Amarillo High Lady Sandies opened District 3-5A play in impressive fashion by blowing out Caprock 79-27 on Friday night at the AHS Activity Center.

The Lady Sandies (24-3, 1-0) had four players put up double figures led by Jada Graves and Taytum Bell who each finished with 14 points. Lacey Rice added 13, and teammate McKenzie Smith tallied 11.

Pringle-Morse makes long awaited history

The Pringle-Morse Lady Cougars made history Friday night during a 64-14 thumping of Channing on Friday night in a District 3-1A opener. With the victory Pringle-Morse has won its first district game in close to 50 years. The high school has been back open for three years, but this is the first year for varsity athletics. For the last four decades the ISD was pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. Out of the eight girls on varsity only one is a junior and the other seven are freshmen and sophomores. In the historic win Natalia Tarango led the Lady Cougars with 23 points, followed by teammate Dehilah Martin’s 21. Pringle-Morse is 7-11 overall on the year but more importantly 1-0 in league play.

Friday’s top performers

  • Canadian’s Brooklyn Cochran dropped in 32 points to lead the Lady Cats to a convincing 83-33 win over River Road to open District 1-3A play.
  • Lucy Richards of Vega dropped in 30 that helped the Lady Longhorns knock off rival Boys Ranch, 52-40.
  • The Gruver duo of Hannon Lankford and Kimber Whitehead combined for 57 points as the Lady Hounds downed West Texas High 86-15. Lankford scored a game-high 24 as Whitehead poured in 23.
