Happy survives Springlake-Earth in OT thriller

CJ Moore knocked down a three-pointer with nine seconds remaining in overtime to lift Happy to a thrilling 69-68 victory over Springlake-Earth during an exciting District 3-1A clash in Earth on Friday night.

This game was close throughout with the contest tied 26-26 at half, Happy leading by four points after three quarters, then heading to overtime tied, 57-57. In overtime, Earth had taken a 68-66 lead in overtime by JJ Jaramillo with 20 seconds to play. However, the Cowboys came back down the floor and Moore was open in the right corner to hit the game-winning three-point basket.

Moore led the Cowboys with 22 points on the night followed by Brance Ferguson’s 18. The loss spoiled a huge night from Jaramillo who poured in a game-high 40 points for the Wolverines.

Happy improves to 7-12 on the year and 2-0 in district. Earth drops to 8-7, 0-2.

District 1-3A looks to be fun

If what we saw from the opening night of play, District 1-3A looks like it’s going to be a battle night in and night out.

Dalhart, Bushland and Canadian all came away with wins on Friday but none of those victories were easy. The Golden Wolves played in front of a packed house at Spearman and were able to come away with a 45-42 road win.

Kyler Read, Talon Garcia and Maddix Blanco had big nights for the Golden Wolves. Read scored a team-high 13 points with Garcia adding 12 and Blanco chipping in with 11.

Bushland had its hands full with upset-minded River Road at home sneaking away with a 52-47 win. The Wildcats never went away knocking down big shots, however, the Falcons were able to hold off River Road in the end.

Bushland’s Brody Baker and Noam Krause scored 12 points each to lead the Falcons. River Road’s Lui Aguilera finished with a game-high 24 points.

Canadian was the only team to get a double-digit victory to open league play beating Tulia 60-44 at home on Friday.

The Wildcats jumped on the Hornets for a 25-10 halftime lead and never looked back. Riggs Pennington was the catalyst for the victory scoring 17 points for Canadian. Teammate Cooper Powell added 15 points.

Shallowater downs Childress

In the first of two meetings between two of the top Class 3A teams in Region I, the Shallowater Mustangs defended their home court by taking care of Childress 81-58 on Friday night.

The Mustangs are off to a great start to the year moving to 18-2 overall and taking the outright lead in District 2-3A at 4-0. Childress falls to 17-6, 3-1.

The Bobcats were hanging around in the first half trailing 39-28 at halftime, but in the second half Shallowater turned it up extending the advantage to 63-32 at the end of three to put the game out of reach.

Hayden Buckley led the Mustangs dropping in 23 points followed by Cooper Lusk with 20. Aiden Allen did have a game-high for the Bobcats.
