AHS falls in stunning fashion, Naz rolls; Friday’s top girls playoff performers

AHS stunned by Canutillo

It didn’t go the way many would have seen it for No. 10-ranked Amarillo High. A favorite in Class 5A Region I, the Lady Sandies season came to a stunning end on Friday afternoon in a 60-59 overtime upset by Canutillo in Seminole in a area round matchup.

This game was originally set for Tuesday but was pushed back three days to do the recent inclement weather across the state.

AHS sees its season end at 20-3 overall, while Canutillo improves to 15-4. Senior Alyssa Bonilla gave the Lady Sandies fits the entire way, racking up a game-high 33 points. AHS was led by McKenzie Smith’s 21.

It was the Lady Sandies first loss to an El Paso-area school in nine years.

Naz cruises

It was another night at the office for the No. 2-ranked Nazareth Swiftettes as they downed district foe Wildorado for a third time this season 82-37 in a Class 1A regional quarterfinal in Vega.

The powerful Swiftettes, the four-time defending 1A state champs, have now won 26 straight postseason games.

Nazareth improves to 25-4 overall, and will now square off with the Borden County-Whiteface winner in the regional semi’s. The Borden County-Whiteface game is set for Tuesday.

Guard Emma Kleman 26 poured in 26 points against the Lady Mustangs in the win.

Wildorado ends a great year at 15-13.

Friday’s top performers

Canyon’s Chloe Callahan and Kenadee Winfrey tallied a total of 42 points in the Lady Eagles thumping of San Elizario, 76-36, in the Class 4A area round. Callahan scored 22, followed by Winfrey’s 20.

Kyla Kane of Wellington had an impressive showing going for 27 points as the Lady Skyrockets knocked off New Deal, 74-37, in a Class 2A regional quarterfinal.

Claude advanced to the 1A regional semifinals after downing Valley 71-34. The Lady Stanfs were paced by Renee Fouquet’s 17 points.
