CHILDRESS – From the opening snap to the final whistle, the Canadian Wildcats didn’t take their foot off the gas proving to be the class of District 1-3A Division II once again in an absolute dominating 49-7 victory against Childress on Charlie Johnston Field at Fair Park Stadium on Friday night.
The victory runs Canadian’s district win streak to 23 straight starting in 2022. Canadian (6-3 overall, 3-0 in district) has also won 67 of their last 69 district games dating back to 2012 and clinches a 12th district title in the last 13 years.
“One thing I know is that district championships matter,” Canadian head coach Andy Cavalier said. “That’s one of the steps we are always trying to accomplish each and every year. We then use that district title to make the best path for ourselves in the playoffs. Winning district matters to a program and that’s big time for us.”
In a game surrounded with expectation, Canadian established itself against the Bobcats (4-4, 1-1) in the first 15 minutes of game time scoring 35 points on 17 offensive plays.

Missing the past two games due to an injury, running back Chris Flores made his presence known in a hurry on the Wildcats third snap breaking loose behind a big hole for a 25-yard touchdown that gave Canadian a 6-0 lead. On the next possession, Flores broke loose for a 45 yard run down inside the Bobcat 5-yard line setting up a quarterback Weston Mitchell 2-yard keeper making it 14-0 following a Jet Cervantes 2-point conversion.
Flores found the endzone one more time early in the second when he took a sweep, waited on his blocks and out ran Childress defenders 52 yards that put Canadian up 28-0 with 11:10 to go in the half.
Flores looked refreshed in his return ending his huge night running the ball 14 times for 164 yards with a pair of scores.
“Chris is such a difference maker,” Cavalier said. “Not just on the field, but in the locker room. He’s a great young man and I’m glad to have him back. When he’s on the field, he’s an excellent two-way player for us. He was everywhere in this game and as good as he was at running back he plays just as many snaps at linebacker.”
Flores wasn’t the only offensive player making a splash. Canadian’s 6-foot-5, 225-pound sophomore tight end Gunner Brady was not only a force with his major blocks to spring Flores, but Brady was making plays with his hands and his feet throughout the first half. Brady caught a slant route on the Wildcats opening drive to set the tone. Later, with the Wildcats leading 14-0 Brady caught a pass from Mitchell over the middle close to midfield. After the catch, Brady took a pop from Childress defender Dathan Hassall sending Brady’s mouthpiece flying 10-yards backwards.
Instead of going to the ground, Brady stayed on his feet, made a spin, and took off for a 69-yard touchdown in an unbelievable moment.
“Gunner’s stature makes such a difference,” Cavalier said. “He is hard to bring down and he plays with great effort. Anyone else probably goes down on that play but he stayed on his feet and then ran all the way for a score. That’s just the type of plays we expect from him.”
Brady snagged five catches for 115 yards and was just as impactful on defense with eight total tackles, three of those for a loss and two sacks.

Mitchell was also a spark to the Canadian offense going 15-of-24 for 252 yards with four passing TDs. He also ran for 71 yards and a score.
Speaking of defense, the Wildcat defense may have been overshadowed by the offensive production but Canadian shut Childress down. The Bobcats never had a flow as Canadian limited Childress to 97 total yards on 49 plays. Defensive lineman Eddie Jaquez had eight tackles, three for a loss and two sacks, and defensive back Bryan Mondragon had an interception with 11 total tackles.
“I felt like defensive coordinator Morgan Brady had a great plan and did a great job of teaching it,” Cavalier said. “The team went out and executed that plan and we got all over them. That’s a huge credit to coach Brady and are entire staff.”
