Laney Jones, Canyon High School volleyball, Sr.

On the court: Jones has come out on fire for the Canyon Lady Eagles, especially to open District 4-4A play. The Lady Eagles couldn’t have asked for a better start by getting a four-set win over Hereford followed by a five-set victory against rival West Plains last Saturday. Jones was outstanding in both matchups doing her job on offense and defense. Against the Lady Whitefaces, Jones landed 20 kills to go with 24 digs for a double-double. In the victory over West Plains, the senior stepped up once more with 20 kills and slid on the hardwood for 25 digs for another double-double effort. On the season so far, Jones has already totaled 352 kills on top of 251 digs.

Coach Sara Morath: “We are playing really well, and I love how we’ve started district play. We didn’t finish West Plains off like I wanted to, but we were able to comeback and win that fifth set to get the win. Laney is such a key player for us and she is super impressive to watch. She is amazing on offense at getting her kills but she reads the defense well and she is a doing a great job on that side. I’m just overall happy with her and her leadership. She is the type of athlete that has it all.”

Jones: “The start of district has gone really well for us, and the West Plains win last weekend was big. I think for myself and being a senior, I’m doing a better job of being a leader and I’m more consistent than I was last year. I’m doing a better job of getting the kills of the pass and my defense has improved. I think I’ve also done a good job of reading hitters.”
