Following a log jammed 36 holes of play, Hunter Corman caught fire down the stretch on the back nine during Sunday’s final round to pull away and win the ASCO ABC7 Tall Tower Open on an extremely windy Sunday afternoon on the Mustang Layout at the Ross Rogers Golf Complex.

Corman smoked both the WildHorse and Mustang sides at Ross Rogers over three days finishing with a 54-score of 18-under par 198 (65-66-67).

The 18-year old Corman, who just graduated from Wildorado High School in May, is having a red-hot spring and summer on the links.

In May, Corman helped his Mustangs to a silver medal as a team at the UIL Class 1A state golf tournament and won the UIL Class 1A individual state championship. Last Saturday, Corman and his parter Jenner King, punched a ticket to the Coors Tournament of Champions in August by winning the Whing Ding Invitational at the Amarillo Country Club.

“Being a part of the Coors Tournament of Champions has always been a goal of mine,” said Corman who has now won two Amarillo Major Golf summer events. “It’s truly special and very special to win it as an individual.”

Corman, last year’s Tall Tower champion Tyler Paige and Andrew Brewer were all within one shot of heading into Sunday’s final round. Paige held the lead through the first nine holes and had a one shot lead on Corman through the 13th hole.

The turning point for Corman came on the 14th. On a very difficult par 4, Corman stuck his approach shot within 10-feet of the flag while Paige had to hit a wedge into the green on his third attempt. Paige went on to miss his par putt while Corman knocked down his birdie putt and took the lead for good from that point forward.

“It was a battle with those guys over three days,” Corman said. “I hit a really good wedge shot on the 14th hole and that put me in really good position to capitalize. That left me inside 10-feet for a birdie putt and I was able to make it. I had a hiccup on the 15th hole, but I was able to come back with birdies at 16 and 17 and finish strong.”

On his final six holes, Corman was able to clinch the championship thanks to going 3-under par. Corman tallied 20 birdies with an eagle over the three rounds. Brewer finished second at 15-under par (63-67-71 – 201), and Paige was third (64-66-73 – 203).
