Dumas dominates San Elizario
Dumas help set the tone on what was another big weekend for District 4-4A against El Paso area competition during the second round of the UIL high school softball playoffs.
The Demonettes exploded for a 10-run first inning on the way to a 25-1 thumping of San Elizario in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal Saturday morning at the Seminole Softball Complex.

The Demonettes jumped all over San Elizario in this one-game series. Building an early 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first, Lisbeth Quiroz drove a three-run home run to center field that put the Demonettes in complete control up 6-0. Yara Vargas added to the hit parade going a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish that included one of of the Demonettes five homers on the day. Vargas finished with four RBIs. Teammate Madi Zubia was also 4-for-4 with a home run and ended the game driving in a team-best five runs.
In the circle, Star Cortes and Zubia were dominant. Cortes worked a quick two innings with three strikeouts. Zubia pitched three scoreless innings in relief racking up seven K’s.
Dumas (32-2-1) will now take on Mineral Wells (25-8) in the regional semifinal round with the best-of-three series starting at 6 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Frenship Memorial High School.
West Plains gets by El Paso Yselta
In a competitive series, West Plains was able to get by El Paso Yselta in a two-game sweep during the UIL Class 4A Division I regional quarterfinal round Thursday and Friday in Monahans.
West Plains handled Ysleta in Thursday’s opener 14-4, however, the Lady Wolves had a much closer matchup Thursday, getting a walk-off for a thrilling 6-5 victory to gain the sweep.
In that final contest, Ysleta and West Plains were tied, 5-5, heading into the bottom of the seventh. In the Lady Wolves final at-bat, Emory Chandler was able to step up, delivering a double down the line to left field that scored Ivanna Zuniga for the game-winning run. Chandler was 2-for-4 in the clinching win.
West Plains pitcher Jaylen Kaps was heavily relied on in both games. In the opener, Kaps tossed a complete game, allowing three runs with 11 strikeouts for the victory. In the game-sealing win, Kaps entered in the first inning, working 6.1 innings, giving up three runs with 10 more K’s.
The Lady Wolves (25-11) are set to square off with Springtown (24-10) with the first of a best-of-three series beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Abilene Christian University.

Canyon pummels Clint
Canyon scored early and often on the way to a convincing sweep of Clint to capture the UIL Class 4A Division II regional quarterfinal championship Thursday and Friday in Hobbs, N.M.
The Lady Eagles soared past Clint by a combined 38-0, winning the first game 23-0, and then clinched the series with a 15-0 blanking.
Canyon (24-13) will now challenge Brock (21-9) in the regional quarterfinals in a best-of-three series which is set to open at 7 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Lubbock Christian University.
In the first blowout victory, Canyon’s Isabella Quintanilla drove in three RBIs behind two doubles. In the clinching win, Faith McGuire homered and doubled to register three RBIs.
REGIONAL QUARTERFINAL QUICK HITS
Randall rolled past El Paso Riverside 20-7, and 20-5 for a sweep in the UIL Class 4A Division II regional quarterfinals. The Lady Raiders pounded out 24 hits over the two wins. Emily Cuellar was a combined 5-for-8 in the sweep with five RBIs. Teammate Kaley Wiseman added two doubles in the second game, driving in three runs. Randall (28-8) will battle Snyder (23-9-2) in the regional semifinals with a best-of-three series beginning at 6 p.m. Thursday on the campus of Lubbock-Cooper Liberty High School.
Bushland was able to beat Brownfield in a pair of one-run games during a UIL Class 3A Division I regional quarterfinal in Plainview on Wednesday. The Lady Falcons defeated the Lady Cubs 7-6 in the first game, and then get a 10-9 victory to close out the sweep. Bushland’s Kylee Jordan paced Bushland in the opener going 3-for-4 with two RBIs, and teammate Piper Francis had a three-run inside the park homer in the second game. Bushland (18-14) is now set to play Iowa Park (26-6-1) in a best-of-three series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Lubbock-Cooper Softball Complex.
Canadian kept up its historic playoff run by doubling up Alpine 4-2 in a one-game UIL Class 3A Division II regional quarterfinal Thursday at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty. The Lady Cats trailed 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth before a two-run single by Callie Flowers gave Canadian the lead for good at 3-2. Teammate Maddlynn Longoria was outstanding in the circle, throwing a complete game with 15 strikeouts. Canadian (25-7) awaits the Jacksboro-Wall winner in the regional semifinals.
