Amarillo High demolishes Abilene Cooper
Dominant hitting along with dominant pitching were a recipe for success during an Amarillo High two-game sweep of Abilene Cooper during the UIL Class 5A bi-district round Thursday and Friday at Lubbock-Cooper in Woodrow.
The Sandies took down the Cougars 4-1 in Thursday’s opener, and were able to complete the sweep with a 10-1 victory Friday.
The AHS pitching staff were a huge factor over the 14 innings. In the opener, Jayden Cedillo earned the win, scattering four Cooper hits during a complete game, allowing only one run with five strikeouts. In Friday’s close out contest, Taegen Tate took the hill and went to work, throwing six innings of scoreless baseball, allowing just four hits with six K’s of his own.
[tds_partial_locker tds_locker_id=”26894″]Austin Sluder took matters into his own hand for the Sandie offense. The AHS outfielder had a solid series going a combined 3-for-6 with a double, and a triple to finish with three RBIs.
The Sandies (30-4) are advancing to the regional quarterfinals to take on El Paso Bel Air (18-11) at a time and place to be determined.
CLASS 4A
West Plains wins 100th game in four years as baseball program during sweep of Seminole
It was a special weekend for the West Plains Wolves on top of sweeping Seminole to clinch the UIL Class 4A Division I bi-district championship Saturday at the Plainview Baseball Complex.
The Wolves defeated Seminole 10-5 on Thursday in the opener, and then finished off the series with a 14-1 victory Saturday. Thanks to Saturday’s win, head coach Colby Chandler and his team celebrated their 100th win in just four years as a baseball program.
West Plains improves to 25-7 and will now head to the regional quarterfinals to square off with El Paso Ysleta (15-17) with a best-of-three series beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday in Andrews.
Elijah Vasquez feasted on Indians pitching in both wins going a combined 6-for-7 with a pair of two run home runs in each contest. Vasquez tallied a total of nine RBIs in the series.
Hereford topples Andrews
Hereford help make it a District 4-4A sweep in the first round by taking a best-of-three series from Andrews to claim the Class 4A Division I bi-district title.
The Whitefaces lost a 3-1 contest in the series opener, but were able to rally Saturday for a 7-0 shutout and a 10-4 victory to seal the series.
Hereford standout Kalub Ramirez was lights out in the second game, tossing a seven inning shutout while racking up an impressive 14 strikeouts. In the third and final game, teammate Gavin Hill went 3-for-4 with three RBIs.
Hereford runs its overall record to 19-13. The Whitefaces are now set to face El Paso Riverside (23-9) in the regional quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined.
Canyon clobbers Fort Stockton
Canyon was able to put two very strong games together and earn a sweep of Fort Stockton in a UIL Class 4A Division II bi-district matchup Thursday and Friday in Seminole.
The Eagles completely outmatched Fort Stockton beating the Panthers by a combined 25-2. Canyon won the first game of the best-of-three series 15-0, and followed that with a 10-2 victory for the sweep.
Canyon (24-7-1) is now set to face Clint (19-11-1) in the regional quarterfinal in a best-of-three series starting with the opener at 7 p.m. Thursday back in Seminole.
Andrew Bellino went a combined 4-for-8 to lead Canyon with two doubles, and a triple, ending the series with four RBIs. Senior Bayler Schilling set the tone in the opening game, tossing a five inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Randall rallies past Midland Greenwood
Randall had to fight back, but were able to rally past Midland Greenwood in a third and decisive game to clinch the UIL Class 4A Division II bi-district championship Saturday at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty High School.
The Raiders won Thursday’s opener 5-3 only to see Greenwood battle back Saturday to even the series with a 15-12 victory. In the rubber match later in the afternoon, Randall erased a 6-4 deficit to score five runs over the fourth and fifth innings to get a 9-7 win and take the series.
The Raiders move to 17-14-1 overall and are set up to play Fabens (16-12) in the regional quarterfinals at a time and place to be determined.
Jaxton Pond delivered a clutch two-run double to give Randall the lead for good in Game 3 on Saturday and Easton Bush drove in a pair of runs.
CLASS 3A
Bushland blasts Slaton
Bushland made quick work of Slaton thanks to a 15-1 victory on Friday and an 11-0 shutout on Saturday during the UIL Class 3A Division I bi-district round at Wilder Field on the campus of Wayland Baptist University in Plainview.
The Falcons (23-7) advance to the regional quarterfinals for a matchup with Denver City (21-10) with the best-of-three series beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty High School.
Bushland Wade McConnell had quite the series going a combined 5-for-6 with a homer, a double and finished with four RBIs.
Tulia downs Dimmitt
After falling in game one, Tulia rallied back Saturday for a pair of thrilling wins to defeat Dimmitt and win the UIL Class 3A Division II bi-district championship.
Dimmitt won the series opener 6-4 on Wednesday, but the Hornets stung the Bobcats with an 8-4 victory followed by a come-from-behind 7-5 win to clinch the series.
This is a special moment for the Tulia baseball program as the Hornets win their first postseason series since 2018.
In the third and decisive contest, Tulia trailed 5-1 after five innings. The Hornets cut the deficit 5-4 after six innings and in the top of the seventh, the Hornets made the rally complete plating three runs highlighted by a Zach Trevino RBI go-ahead single. Teammate David Abeyta played his part in the win going 2-for-4 with a double, a homer and finished with four RBIs.
Tulia (17-6) now faces Odessa Compass Academy (30-3) in the regional quarterfinals with a best-of-three game series starting at 1 p.m. Thursday at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty High School.
Childress claws past Lubbock Roosevelt
The Childress Bobcats are moving on after getting by Lubbock Roosevelt to win the UIL Class 3A Division II bi-district championship on Saturday in Sweetwater.
The Bobcats dropped the series opener 8-3, but were able to bounce back with a 7-2 win to even the series and followed that with a 21-9 thumping of the Eagles in the rubber match.
Childress (10-19) will now head to the regional quarterfinals for a date with Coahoma (15-11) at a time and place to be determined.
On Saturday night, Creeden Bell did damage to Roosevelt, going 5-for-6 at the plate that included two homers while registering three RBIs.
CLASS 2A
Sunray sinks Wellington
Sunray was able to advance past the first round of the UIL playoffs with a pair of convincing victories against Wellington during a Class 2A Division I bi-district matchup Wednesday at West Texas High in Stinnett.
The Bobcats beat up the Skyrockets combining for 34 runs over the two-game sweep. Sunray whipped Wellington in the opener 20-6, then busted open the night cap for a 14-4 win to complete the series win.
In the early matchup, Sunray scored in every inning and posted 10 runs in the top of the third. Issac Mendoza did damage to Skyrocket pitching going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Angel Vargas was 4-for-5 with two triples and drove in a game-high five runs.
In the late contest, Mendoza kept up his hot bat with a 3-for-4 performance finishing with a pair of RBIs, as teammate Parker Johnson went 4-for-4 with two doubles, driving home two runs.
Sunray (14-5) is headed to the regional quarterfinal round to battle New Deal (23-3) with a best-of-three game series starting at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Tascosa Baseball Complex.
Wellington ends its year at 8-6.
Gruver hammers Memphis
The Gruver Greyhounds opened the UIL playoffs carried on their hot play from the regular season by sweeping the Memphis Cyclones in the Class 2A Division II bi-district round Tuesday at the Highland Park Baseball Complex.
Gruver ran all over Memphis in the opening game 20-1 and then followed that with a 10-0 shutout to close out the series.
Gruver (15-1) advances to the regional quarterfinals where the Greyhounds will now face Smyer (11-14) in a best-of-three series beginning at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bushland Baseball Complex.
The Greyhounds got off to a start against the Cyclones in the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday. Up 1-0 after the first inning, Gruver broke the contest wide open with a 10-run top of the second to set the tone and never look back. Jett Pittman was in control on the mound, tossing four innings, scattering four hits, allowing just one run with seven strikeouts. Mason Lankford went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with three RBIs and Cohen Jones drove in a pair of runs.
In the series clincher later that evening, Pittman let his bat do the talking with a 2-for-3 outing at the dish that included a pair of triples, finishing the game with three RBIs. Pake Babbs added a two-run double and Briggs Satterfield threw a complete game shutout, racking up six K’s.
Memphis ends its season at 4-9.
CLASS 1A
Nazareth beats up Borden County
One of the Texas Panhandle teams hopeful for a deep postseason push got off on the right foot Thursday.
The Nazareth Swifts were able to blank Borden County 12-0 in a one-game UIL Class 1A bi-district clash at Wilder Field on the campus of Wayland Baptist University in Plainview.
The Swifts (9-5) advance to the regional quarterfinal to meet up with Claude (7-2) in a one-game series set for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Floydada Baseball Complex.
Fletcher Schacher propelled the Swifts to the win against the Coyotes. The center fielder finished his afternoon with two doubles, driving in four RBIs. Teammate Breck Proctor handcuffed Borden County, throwing five shoutout innings, giving up just two hits with 10 strikeouts.
