Cooper Nichols, Farwell golf, Jr.
On the course: The Farwell junior put together one of the more incredible performances across the state at any classification during the Region I-2A Golf Tournament last week. Not only did Nichols help lead his team to an exciting regional championship winning the team title on a third playoff hole.
Nichols had his game going for all 36-holes at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course in Canyon, firing rounds of 66-64, going 14-under-par over the 36 holes for an eye-opening score of 130. On top of his outstanding showing, Nichols carded a total of 12 birdies along with a pair of eagles on his rounds.
Nichols and the Steers are set to compete at the UIL Class 2A state tournament on April 27-28 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.
Coach Jay Thackston: ““I have to be honest, our team goal was to get the team to state and we weren’t talking about winning regionals. We knew we’d be in a fight and we were. After day one, we were in position to win the title and it worked out. Watching Cooper was like watching The Masters. People were gathering and surrounding the greens to watch him. He wsa in the moment throughout the tournament and it was special to watch. He had great focus and he’s just the type of young man that is goal oriented.”
Nichols: “It was an exciting tournament and I’m so glad that our team advanced. I’ve never been a part of a playoff, so that was very dramatic and exciting, and to get the win was awesome. I’ve put in a ton of time and golf is my passion. It all came together for me at the right time. My goal was to not think too much and just focus shot by shot. I think I was able to do that.”
