
In one of the more surprising meets, the West Plains Lady Wolves were able to stun heavily favorite and tradition-rich Canyon in more ways than one to win the programs first ever District 4-4A championship on Wednesday and Thursday at Bulldogs Stadium in Borger.
It came in thrilling fashion as well.
Coming down to the final race and the final leg, West Plains standout Jackelyn Hernandez took the stick at the same time as Lady Eagle star Addyson Bristow and by the time the time the two made the final turn, it was Hernandez who was able to pull away from Bristow to get the win as the Lady Wolves finished with 196.33 points to Canyon’s 190.
Hernandez put on a show Wednesday and Thursday. Not only was she a part of the mile relay team that ran a gold medal time of 4:01.5, Hernandez also stacked up the gold medals winning the 400-meter dash with a 59.32, and the long jump thanks to a leap of 18-feet-6 1/4 inches. Hernandez also qualified for area in the triple jump with a bronze (34-5 1/2).

Canyon’s Bristow did have a great meet. Bristow won the 800-meter run clocking a time of 2:19.77 and won the 1600-meter race with a 5:13.54. Bristow’s teammate Presli Pool was very impressive. Pool finished right behind Bristow in the 800 (2:21.10) and the 1600-meter (5:13.64) for silver medals, but Pool did get gold in the 3200-meter race with a time of 11:02.88.

Unlike the girls meet, the Canyon Eagles absolutely dominated by stacking up 208 points which was over 100 points better than second place Dumas (105).
Emmitt Stewart helped pace Canyon. Stewart blazed to a time of 52.12 to win gold in the 400-meter dash. Stewart was also part of the Eagles mile relay team along with Nolan Prock, Jacob Asbill, and Baylor West that ran a gold medal time of 3:20.57. In the long distance events, Canyon took over like usual. Domenic San Miguel won the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:28.79 while getting second in the 3200-meter race (9:41.06). Teammate Noah Cooper won the 3200-meter at 9:38.46 and was third in the 1600-meter (4:29.05).
Randall’s Caden Brown and Promise Sherwood also left their marks.

Brown won the long jump hitting a leap of 22-4 and was a part of Randall’s gold medal sprint relay team (42.09). Brown also punched a ticket to area in the 100-meter dash getting bronze (10.65) and as a part of the bronze medal 800-meter relay (1:27.98). Sherwood showcased his speed with a season-best 10.44 to win the 100-meter dash and will also move on to area as part of the sprint and 800-meter relay.
In the field events, West Plains prolific high jumper Brycen Williams cleared a season-best 6-feet-10 inches for a gold medal.
The District 3-4A/ 4-4A Area Track and Field Meet is set for Thursday at Lubbock-Cooper High School.
