Canyon ISD wasted no time pulling the interim tag off, and naming Matt Lovorn as the new Canyon Eagles head football coach during a special board meeting Tuesday night.

Lovorn had been the offensive coordinator of the Eagles the past three years before being named interim in early October after Todd Winfrey was relieved of his duties.

Lovorn did a superb job leading Canyon to a 4-4 record in his interim role that included UIL Class 4A Division I regional semifinals.

“This is a dream for me,” Lovorn said. “I didn’t think that I would be in this spot. You’ll see us keep our integrity and our toughness. That’s one thing we preach to win football games and in life. I want to keep building genuine relationships with the players and make good things happen in the field house.”

The Canyon High School graduate, Lovorn is no stranger to head coaching success. Lovorn spent 14 years at Stratford, and eight of those as the head football coach of the Elks. During Lovorn’s tenure, the Elks went 89-22 and won the 2021 UIL Class 2A Division II state championship.
