Bombshell news came out of Canyon ISD on Monday evening. The school district put out a press release saying that Canyon head football coach Todd Winfrey has been removed from the position and offensive coordinator and Canyon graduate Matt Lovorn will be the interim head coach for the foreseeable future.
Here is what Canyon ISD released to the media Monday night.
“As of Monday, October 6th, Matt Lovorn, the current Associate Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator, will assume the role of Acting Head Coach for the Canyon High School football program. Canyon ISD will not provide further comment at this time as this is an ongoing personnel matter.”

Winfrey has been the Eagles football coach the past five years and has been on the staff for over 20 years. In those five seasons, Winfrey has accumulated an overall record of 36-14 including a 4-1 record this season. Canyon is set to open District 2-4A Division I play against West Plains at 7 p.m. Friday at Happy State Bank Stadium.
Lovorn, who is in his third year as the Eagles offensive coordinator, was the Stratford Elks head football coach for eight years winning 89 games leading the Elks to the 2021 UIL Class 2A Division II state championship.
