Claude continues to roll
Last week Claude used a field goal with less than a minute left in the game to down McLean.
This week, Trapper Godfrey made sure their game with Groom wouldn’t come down to the final minute as the Mustangs swarmed the Tigers 50-0 on Friday night.
The junior running back got things started early on a three-yard run and then grabbed the first of three interceptions in the half and returned it 39-yards for the score and a quick 16-0 lead for Claude.
However, that was just the start of the night for Godfrey. On Claude’s next possession he grabbed a 20-yard scoring strike from Holden Tice to give them a 22-0 lead with 2:26 left in the first. After the Mustangs defense forced a turnover on downs Godfrey found paydirt again from 19-yards out to send Claude to the second quarter with a 30-0 lead.
Early in the second, the Mustangs star found the end zone again from 5-yards away to give Claude a 38-0 lead. Godfrey’s final act was a pick six from the Claude 32 with 1:29 left in the first half and a 44-0 advantage headed to half. The Mustangs then finished off Groom (0-3) on their first possession of the second half as Tice ran it in from the 15 for the mercy rule win.
On the night, Godfrey had three rushing touchdowns, a receiving score and two interceptions returned for scores as the Mustangs move to 3-1 on the season with a home game against San Jacinto Christian Academy next Friday.
Strong second half propels Swifts
Halfway through the second quarter it looked like Valley was going to pick up their first win of the season, but Nazareth scored 38 unanswered points to seal an 84-50 victory on the road Thursday night.
Entering the second quarter, the Patriots (0-4) trailed the Swifts 24-22. After forcing a turnover on downs, the Patriots took over deep in their own territory at the 10-yard line. Facing a third and four from the 21, Carson Tucker danced around in the pocket before finding Damian Valdes streaking down the right sideline for a 59-yard scoring strike to take a 28-24 lead.
On the ensuing Swifts possession, Tucker picked off an errant pass at the Valley 24. Utilizing a long pass, the Patriots finished the drive off with a Tucker to Valdes 10-yard scoring strike to give Valley a 36-24 lead and all the momentum.
Momentum can be fleeting, and Nazareth took the bull by the horns following that score. An onside kick gave the Swifts the ball at the Patriots 38 and Rhett Ethridge found Lincoln Pohlmeier deep down field for a long scoring strike to cut the lead to 36-30.
Pohlmeier then forced a turnover on Cole Walden at the Valley 22 and his brother Cameron did the rest. After a 19-yard run put the ball at the three, Cameron Pohlmeier finished things off on a strong run up the middle and a 38-36 lead for the Swifts.
Cameron Pohlmeier wasn’t done as he intercepted the ball deep in Nazareth territory and returned it to midfield with less than two minutes to go in the first half. Five plays later, his brother Lincoln found Blaise Snead wide open at the five and the senior strolled into the endzone for a 27-yard scoring play and a 46-36 halftime lead for the Swifts.
Cameron Pohlmeier was a big reason why the Swifts nailed down the victory in Valley. The tough as nails junior posted 325 yards rushing on 20 carries amassing eight touchdowns while tacking on 65 yards receiving and another score to pass the Nazareth offense.
Miami topples White Deer
In a battle of unbeaten teams Miami was able to prevail past White Deer 30-14 on Friday night riding the legs of their backfield and a strong defense.
This game started out like a track meet as the teams combined for 36 points in the first quarter as Miami (4-0) held a 22-14 lead. The Warriors used a punishing ground game to nab that early lead led by freshman Chance White.
However, both defenses stiffened as Miami registered the only score the rest of the way as Jack Kotara found Noah Homfeld from the 19 for the only score of the second half.
White was the workhorse for the Warriors as the speedster carried the ball 26 times on the night for 242 yards and two scores. Kotara was the catalyst for the Warriors defense registering an eye popping 19 tackles including two for losses and grabbed an interception while Tyler Anderson had nine tackles and Kristopher Gorecki eight.
White Deer (3-1) had success through the air as Foster Black was 9-of-18 for 154 yards and two touchdowns with Lucas Radina grabbing one of those for a score while tallying 95 yards receiving. Radina was the leading tackler for the Bucks with 15 on the night while Black had eight.
Whitharral races past Cowboys
Through four weeks of play, Whitharral has quietly amassed a 4-0 record as they ran over Happy 64-6 on Friday night as Brent Robinson put on a show in front of the hometown crowd.
The Panthers, ranked No. 6 coming into the week, jumped out quickly with Robinson racing to the house from 69-yards out to give his team an early 8-0 lead. Happy (0-4), for the first time all season, answered that score with one of their own as Kaden Baker hit AJ Seal from 43-yards out but failed to convert on the kick to narrow the lead to 8-6.
From that point forward it was all Panthers as Robinson scored three more times in the quarter including a 42-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on a free kick after Whitharral registered a safety on the Cowboys.
The Panthers amassed 285 yards on the ground with Robinson accounting for 224 of those with four of his five carries resulting in scores. Besides the kickoff return score, the speedy senior also found Nate Samson open for a 20-yard scoring pass and returned a pass 28-yards to combine for seven total scores on the night.
Whitharral’s defense was also impressive as they held the Cowboys to 50 total yards and forced four turnovers in the process to go along with that safety.
