THURSDAY’S GAMES
Class 5A
Palo Duro (0-1) vs. Caprock (0-1), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
Both teams arrive in this 55th meeting between city rivals feeling a little pain from opening with shutout losses last week. The Rock 51-0 loss to Dumas was an eye-opener. PD’s 10-0 loss to Tascosa was deceiving in that the Dons look a whole lot better than last year and showed offensive life but just didn’t convert in the red zone. PD’s speed and running back Raymond Johnson V is the difference. … PD 42, Caprock 7.
Abilene Wylie (0-0) at Lubbock Monterey (0-1), 7 p.m., Lowrey Field at Plains Capital Park
Wylie looked impressive in its opener shutting out Brownwood 25-0. Monterey hung in with Oklahoma’s state 6A defending champs losing in coach Jason Sims era opener. Close. But Wylie defense is the difference. … Wylie 21, Monterey 17.

West Plains (1-0) vs. Clint Horizon (0-1), 6 p.m., at Mustang Bowl, Andrews
West Plains maybe didn’t pick up right from where it left off last year, but the Wolves showed they’re primed for another big season with their 33-10 win over Seminole last week to open the season. They have a long road trip and a short week when they play a neutral site game against Class 5A Division II Horizon, which in and of itself presents enough of a challenge. It’s just another in a long line which West Plains has passed in its short history, and this one’s no different. … West Plains 35, Horizon 17.
Class 1A
Silverton (0-1) at Vernon Northside (0-0), 7:30 p.m.
It was a tough opening week for new head coach Jeremy Holt who is now coaching his alma mater. Things don’t get easier this week as Northside is better than many may expect which will lead to another loss for the Owls. … Vernon Northside 60, Silverton 34.
Miami (1-0) vs. Rotan (1-0), 7:30 p.m., at Patriots Field, Valley
A season opening win over Booker showed why there’s so much optimism about this Warriors team. That positive feeling won’t change this week as they take care of the Yellowhammers in quick fashion. … Miami 52, Rotan 6.
Lazbuddie (0-0) at Boys Ranch (1-0), 7 p.m.
After a winless first year in six-man, the Roughriders took down Silverton on the road behind the arm of Isaac Acosta. Can they make it two in a row against the Longhorns? You bet they can. … Boys Ranch 72, Lazbuddie 18.
Groom (0-1) at Hedley (0-0), 7 p.m.
Both teams have thin rosters which could always play into the outcome of the game. Both teams play hard each week but the Tigers have more talent which translates into a win. … Groom 60, Hedley 20.
Lefors (1-0) at White Deer (1-0), 7 p.m.
With both teams picking up solid wins last week this game now has some juice to it. The Pirates will need to bring their best game as the Bucks look much improved from last year. This one will be close early, but White Deer will pull away at home in the second half. … White Deer 52, Lefors 22.
Anton (0-1) at Lubbock Kingdom Prep. (1-0), 7 p.m.
The road doesn’t get any easier for the Bulldogs as they face a traditionally strong Warriors team on the road. This one will be over quickly. … Lubbock Kingdom Prep 54, Anton 8.
Guthrie (0-1) at Lorenzo (0-1), 7 p.m.
After dropping a tough road game last week, the Hornets are looking to make a statement in front of the home crowd with a win. This will be a tough one but Lorenzo will outlast the Jaguars. … Lorenzo 46 Guthrie 36.

Frenship (0-1) at Wichita Falls Memorial (1-0), 7 p.m., Memorial Stadium
Frenship sputtered on offense last week scoring one TD in the loss to Bryron Nelson. I’m sure week two will look better, but Memorial only lost three games last year and one was to Frenship. Revenge time.… Memorial 28, Frenship 21.
Amarillo High (1-0) at San Angelo Central (0-1), 7 p.m., San Angelo Stadium
The Sandies looked absolutely awesome on offense last week in hammering Odessa High 55-12 and calling off the dogs by halftime. Central took one on the chin to powerful Abilene High but no shame in that game. Look, this is quite a lengthy road trip even for AHS to have to handle. But something special is brewing in Sandie Land this year. … AHS 48, Central 31.
Wichita Falls Legacy (1-0) at Tascosa (1-0), 7 p.m., Dick Bivins Stadium
Other than the rash of penalties, Tascosa looked legit in the 10-0 win over Palo Duro. What a defensive front the Rebs had on display against PD led by Texas Tech signee Crush Johnson. Remember, Legacy lost all 10 of its games last year. So, the win over Lubbock Coronado last week was a huge momentum boost to the program. Rebs will look even better this week on offense. Quick note for you who love Texas High School football stuff: The sophomore QB for Legacy is Knox Hodges, son of former Hereford great Slade Hodges. … Tascosa 42, Legacy 14.
Lubbock Cooper (0-1) at Lubbock Coronado (0-1), 7 p.m., Lowrey Field at Plains Capital Park
Cooper enters this one ticked off having seen sits 11-year-year opening-game win streak end to Lovejoy last week. … Cooper 35, Coronado 14.

Dumas (1-0) at Borger (0-1), 7 p.m.
These two teams couldn’t be headed into week two from more opposite directions. Dumas opened things impressively, crushing Class 5A Division I Caprock 51-0, and Borger was routed by Class 3A Division I Bushland 55-0. Itr’s unclear how indicative either score was. Borger will have some boost from this being the home opener, but the Bulldogs won’t have enough to stay close against a Dumas team with quarterback Colton Mills and genuine postseason aspirations. … Dumas 45, Borger 13.
Dalhart (1-0) at Perryton (0-1), 7 p.m.
An intriguing interclass matchup from northern Texas Panhandle schools as 4A Perryton hosts 3A Dalhart. Perryton’s offense had a hard time getting going on the road against Canyon, while Dalhart lit it up in a 55-15 win over 4A DI Levelland, a district rival of Perryton’s. This should be one of the most competitive matchups of the night. The visiting Wolves might be a little better than advertised, and they’ll pull out a close one. … Dalhart 23, Perryton 20.
Pampa (0-1) at Plainview (0-1), 7 p.m.
Pampa suffered a heartbreaking one-point loss at home to Iowa Park in the season opener, where a missed extra point was the difference. The Harvesters and Plainview showed the ability to move the ball and score in losing efforts. That will likely be the case in this one, with Pampa running back Max Neff coming off a 256-yard, three-touchdown game. However, the long trip south for Harvesters will work to Plainview’s advantage. … Plainview 34, Pampa 24.
Monahans (0-1) at Randall (1-0), 7 p.m.
This is another game involving a long road trip, this one involving Monahans making the trek from the Permian Basin to north Canyon where Randall will host its home opener at Happy State Bank Stadium. The Raiders are coming off a decisive 44-23 win at Plainview to open the season and the home crowd should be pumped for this one. Like last week, look for the Raiders to wear their opponent down in the second half. … Randall 41, Monahans 21.
Lubbock Estacado (0-1) at Hereford (1-0), 7 p.m.
Hereford will be playing a Lubbock ISD school for the second straight week, as the Whitefaces opened by beating Lubbock High on the road, 42-35. There should be plenty of fireworks here, and the Herd will be bolstered plenty by the crowd in their home opener. Kalub Ramirez looks ready to have a huge senior year in his fourth and final season as Hereford’s quarterback, and he’ll lead a close one here. … Hereford 28, Estacado 27.
Canyon (1-0) at Andrews (1-0), 7 p.m.
Both teams are coming off decisive season opening wins last week, making this one intriguing. Canyon faces a challenge with a long road trip against an Andrews team which shut out Clint last week. The Eagles themselves put on a solid defensive display in a 29-6 win over Perryton, so this one likely won’t be a shootout. What it should be is a competitive game against two teams who could meet in the playoffs. … Canyon 20. Andrews 13.
Shallowater (1-0) at Seminole (0-1), 7 p.m.
This is as close as there is to a toss-up in the area this week. Shallowater beat Monahans decisively in the opener, while Seminole suffered an equally decisive loss at West Plains in a much-anticipated game. A hangover for both teams is possible here. Seminole is playing its home opener, and the Indians moved the ball well against West Plains but had few points to show for it. That changes this week. … Seminole 21, Shallowater 19.
Idalou (0-1) at Lubbock-Cooper Liberty (1-0), 7 p.m.
Liberty scored its most decisive victory in school history by opening with a 49-7 rout of New Home as the Patriots began their second year. Idalou had a hard time stopping Sweetwater in a 44-23 loss. Those numbers would seem to add up in Liberty’s favor, as the program seems to be right on schedule in terms of wins and losses. The Patriots will equal last year’s win total this week. … Liberty 42, Idalou 27.

This has become one of the best non-district rivalries between two of the more respected Texas Panhandle programs. Both are coming off impressive wins last week and both are looking to carry on that momentum. … Bushland 30, Canadian 28.

The Eagles were the talk of Week 1 following a stunning and impressive win over River Road. Now it is time to follow that up with their first 2-0 start in nine years. The Broncos will want to rebound after a tough opener against Panhandle. … Fritch 26, Clarendon 19.

One of the marquee games of the night in the Texas Panhandle takes place at Panthers Stadium. A lot of eyes will want to see if the Stratford defense can slow down QB Broxton Robinson and the Panhandle offense. That’s a tough ask. … Panhandle 41, Stratford 26.

Sporting a schedule that is one of the ten toughest in the state means another tall task for the Cowboys. Two dynamic backs in the Wolverines Froylan Agundiz and the Dragons Darren Mackey face off in what should be a dandy of a matchup. Springlake-Earth’s defense will have to minimize big plays while the Dragons have to force Agundiz into being one dimensional.
