Game days for Coach Ufford are all about routine—listening to certain songs and keeping everything the same.
His hidden talent? He can recite random movie quotes from almost any film he’s seen, always ready to lighten the mood.
Firehouse Subs is his go-to pre-game meal, fueling him for the action ahead. If he weren’t coaching, you’d find him teaching math or crunching numbers in accounting.
The best advice he’s received: “The right choices are rarely easy, but at the end of the day stay true to yourself.”
Reserved, Disciplined, and a Little Awkward
Described by his team as reserved, disciplined, and awkward, Coach Ufford brings authenticity and consistency to his role.
His favorite sports movie is Hardball, and Twitter is his social media platform of choice. In his office, the soundtrack is often provided by Girls Coach Mark Smith—“he’s always talking”—adding a touch of camaraderie to the daily grind.
Coaching with Perspective and Purpose
Coach Ufford’s philosophy is grounded in perspective: “At the end of the day, soccer is just a game that we play.
There will always be more to life, but we learn so much through sports.” His motto, “Excellence, tradition, and unity,” or ETU, is a guiding principle at Caprock.
He believes in the importance of field practice, prioritizes defense, and loves running “The Wall Game” drill to build team cohesion.
Community Support and Setting Sights High
For Coach Ufford, the Texas Panhandle sports scene is defined by community. The best part of coaching at Caprock is the people who come out to support the kids—teachers, families, students, and sponsors from all over the east side of town.
“You never know who’s going to show up to a game,” he says, and that sense of support makes every match special.
This season, his goals are clear: win a district title and make a long playoff run, bringing pride to Caprock and its community.
