On the mat: Borger senior Ariana Chavez scored her second straight undefeated season capping her high school career off in grand fashion winning her second straight UIL Class 5A state championship at 235-pound level, pinning Liberty Hill’s Alyciana Rogers in 2:28 to finish the year 47-0 on the season. Over the past two years that resulted in state championships, Chavez was a combined 91-0 and ended her stellar four-year career with 150 wins (150-10 overall).

On top of being a two-time state champion, Chavez was a four-time state qualifier a preseason national All-American and will be competing at the college level.

Coach Mario Vasquez: “Ariana is a one-of-a-kind young lady. She is very simple and very reserved. She has a very blue-collar work ethic. She doesn’t talk a lot but lets her actions do that for her. She is a tremendous leader and holds everyone accountable. She had a big target on her this year, and she kept it light and fun all year and I feel that made her even more successful. She is just a very coachable athlete, and I love being around her.”

Chavez: “It meant so much to me and made me very happy to win another state championship. That’s what we’ve been working for all year. I’ve had so much support from the school and the community it really has been amazing to see. I just wanted to be consistent all year, work hard in practice and get better. I think I did that.”
