Panhandle stays hot with drubbing of West Texas High 

Panhandle didn’t overlook West Texas High before a showdown with Sunray last week cruising to a 67-12 thumping of the Comanches on Friday night at Panthers Stadium.

The Panthers remain undefeated at 7-0 on the year and are now 2-0 in District 1-2A Division I play. WT High falls to 5-2 overall and 1-1 in district.

Quarterback Broxton Robinson was a mismatch for the WT High defense. Robinson blistered the Comanches chewing up for 235 yards rushing on 18 carries with three touchdowns. Robinson then went 9-of-14 through the air for 157 yards with two more scores.

Teammate Rush Waltersheid had three touchdowns on 92 yards rushing and Caden Armes caught five passes for 92 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Robinson was a menace racking up 14 tackles to go with an interception and Brayson Choate led the team with 18 tackles.

Sunray smokes Highland Park 

Like Panhandle, Sunray didn’t look past Highland Park in any way taking down the Hornets in a 68-8 blowout win on Friday night at Hornets Stadium.

Sunray stays perfect on the year at 7-0 while moving to 2-0 in District 1-2A Division I. That sets up the Bobcats hosting Panhandle at 7 p.m. Friday in one of the top Texas Panhandle matchups this season. Highland Park slips to 3-4 overall and 1-1 in district.

In just one half of work, Bobcat quarterback Armando Lujan made strides toward the record books. Before his pads were off in the second half, Lujan completed 12-of-15 passes for 145 yards with four touchdown tosses. Lujan tacked on two rushing touchdowns totaling five TDs on the night.

Lujan is now sitting 200 total touchdowns for his career and is only five behind former Aledo and University of Texas running back Jonathan Gray (205 TDs) for the all-time record in the state of Texas.

Luke Grajeda caught a touchdown pass as did Connor Petereit. Defensively, Sunray limited the Hornets to 99 total yards. Defensive lineman Julio Villado had three tackles, two forced fumbles and an interception.

Spearman handles Sanford-Fritch

Spearman bounced back from a district opening loss to run past Sanford-Fritch 49-6 on the road on Friday night.

The Lynx (3-4) stay in the playoff hunt at 1-1 in District 1-2A Division I while Fritch falls to 1-6 overall and 0-2.

Hudson Swan had a huge night on both sides of the ball. On the offensive side, Swan toted the rock four times for 59 yards with three touchdowns. Defensively, Swan led the way with three interceptions.

Spearman fullback JP Carbajal tallied a game-high 159 yards rushing on just nine carries with two scores and Jailen Vasquez chipped in 77 yards rushing on three carries and snagged a 25-yard reception for a TD.

District 1-2A Division II 

Farwell puts away Vega 

Farwell continues to play solid football getting a third straight win by handling Vega 28-14 at Longhorns Stadium on Friday night.

The Steers, who started the year at 1-4, are now 4-4 overall and 2-0 in District 1-2A Division II. Vega drops to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Trailing 6-0 in the second quarter, Farwell took over in the second quarter behind a Kyler McClaran two-yard touchdown run followed by a Jonathan Armstrong 10-yard scamper to take a 14-6 lead into halftime.

In the second half, McClaran scored his second TD of the game giving the Steers some breathing room and putting the game out of reach for Vega.

Armstrong did most of the damage with his feet rushing for 111 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown. He tacked on 85 passing yards. McClaran ran for 56 yards with a pair of TDs and Ryder McElroy registered 91 yards on 10 carries with a touchdown.

Gruver stays unbeaten 

The Gruver Greyhounds didn’t have a lull after a huge win against Stratford last week.

The Greyhounds made a long road trip worth it to Bovina thanks to downing in a 44-0 shutout on Thursday night.

Gruver remains undefeated on the season at 8-0 and are now 2-0 in District 1-2A Division II. The Mustangs are struggling falling to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in district.

Dax Conyers led the ground game for Gruver piling up 168 yards on 25 carries with two trips to paydirt. Quarterback Briggs Satterfield threw for 165 yards on 9-of-20 passing with two touchdowns and Walker Maupin added 110 yards rushing with a score and added a receiving TD.

The Greyhound defense held Bovina to 82 yards of offense. Emmanuel Valverde made 12 tackles with a sack and went 6-for-6 on extra-points.

District 5-2A Division II 

Wellington cruises to another W

It was another night at the office for Wellington as the Skyrockets dominated Quanah on both sides of the ball for a 49-6 victory on Friday night at Powell Field in Wellington.

Wellington finished the contest with a lopsided stat sheet totaling 440 yards of offense to Quanah’s 16.

The Skyrockets success came through balance. Quarterback Callen Kane was an efficient 9-of-16 for 172 yards passing and a touchdown. Kane chipped in 47 yards rushing for another TD. Brenden Garcia was the main weapon on the outside using his speed to make four catches for 104 yards with a score.

In the run game, Travon Lewis carried it 16 times for 114 yards with a touchdown and Noah Cantu added two scores on 39 yards rushing.

Wheeler blanks Memphis

Wheeler is quietly putting together a superb season getting yet another shutout this time of Memphis 49-0 on Friday night at Cyclones Stadium.

The Mustangs defense has been on another level posting their fourth straight shutout over the last four games. During this impressive shutout streak, Wheeler has outscored its opponents 207-0.

Wheeler held Memphis to 69 total yards forcing two turnovers. Abraham Sigala finished with 17 tackles with five of those for a loss to lead the Mustangs. Garrett Ashurst added 12 tackles and Jackson Graves made 10 tackles.

On the offensive side, running back Julius Atherton galloped for 146 yards on 16 carries with three touchdowns. Quarterback Creed Newkirk threw for 90 yards with a pair of TDs and chewed up 60 yards rushing with another score.

Wheeler is off to a 6-1 mark overall and 2-0 in District 5-2A Division II. Memphis is now 1-5 overall and 1-2.

Shamrock knocks off Clarendon 

Shamrock kept its winning ways going knocking off Clarendon 40-12 on Friday night.

The Irish get their first win against the Broncos for the first time since 2006.

The Irish stay atop the District 5-2A Division II standings at 2-0 and push their overall record to 5-2. Clarendon is still looking for its first win falling to 0-7, 0-2.

Quarterback Philip Cook did what he does best going 13-of-19 for 172 yards passing with two touchdowns. Cook hurt the Broncos with his feet compiling 124 yards on eight carries with four more scores and had two interceptions on defense.

Teammate Josh Whittington had two catches for 42 yards with a score and Layton Gilbert came away with an interception.
