Randall edges Hereford in district thriller
The early showdown to stay unbeaten in district lived up to the hype at Happy State Bank Stadium.
In a game where the teams combined for over 1,000 yards of offense, it was a late defensive stop which won the game, as Randall held Hereford deep in its own end in the final seconds for a 41-34 victory to stay undefeated on the season.
It was every bit as competitive as would be expected, as Randall’s 17-7 lead in the second quarter was the biggest lead of the game. Hereford actually outgained the Raiders (7-0, 2-0 in district) by a 578-487 margin, but it was two big stops at the goal line in the second half which decided the game.
After Randall took that 17-7 lead, Hereford (5-2, 1-1) answered back with a pair of touchdowns to take a 20-17 halftime lead.
The Whitefaces were on the verge of taking a double digit lead to start the second half, but when they opted to go for it on fourth-and-goal, they were stopped at the 1-yard line. That resulted in the biggest play of the night for Randall, as Kaison Benton hit Kaiden Miller on a 99-yard scoring pass to give the Raiders a 24-20 lead.
That didn’t mean Hereford was deterred. The Herd reclaimed the lead with a touchdown to go up 27-24 before Randall’s Jacob Avalos kicked a 23-yard field goal to tie it 27-27 before the end of the quarter.
Randall and Hereford traded touchdowns in the fourth quarter before the Raiders went up 41-34 on Dylan Ray’s 24-yard scoring run. The Herd had a chance to tie it with the ball at the Randall 4-yard line with six seconds left but threw two incompletions as Randall survived.
Ray had an even bigger game running the ball, with 22 carries for 247 yards and two touchdowns.
Hereford’s Kalub Ramirez threw for 384 yards and a touchdown and ran for two scores. Ethan Gonzales had seven catches for 146 yards and Tell Bryant had six catches for 121 yards and a touchdown.
Hereford’s Brylyn Lopez had 27 carries for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Dumas snaps losing skid, dominates Canyon
Dumas said goodbye to a frustrating four-game losing streak in a big way looking very sharp during a 35-9 domination of Canyon during a District 2-4A Division I clash on Friday night at Demons Stadium.
The win propels Dumas to 3-4 overall and right back in the mix of the district race at 1-1. The Eagles are not off to the district start they were looking for dropping to 0-2.
The Demons bookended the first half with two big play touchdowns to give Dumas a 14-0 halftime advantage.
On the opening offensive snap of the game, quarterback Colton Mills set the tone finding a wide-open Johnny Marquez over the top of the Canyon defense for a 55-yard pitch and catch giving the Demons a 7-0 lead.
With less than two minutes in the half, Mills went back to work threading a needle to Blake Robinson on a slant. Robinson got behind the defense and sprinted toward the endzone for a 57-yard score and a 14-0 lead for Dumas.
Canyon did cut the deficit to 21-9 briefly in the third, but the Dumas offense responded on another Mills touchdown toss this time to James Coaly for 38-yards and the final statement came on a Mills connection to Imanol Marquez for a 28-yard touchdown leaving the Eagles grounded at 35-9.
Mills was magnificent going 13-of-21 for 284 yards with four touchdown passes to four different receivers. The sophomore used his feet to tote the rock 14 times for 100 yards.
The Dumas defense did its job holding Canyon to 202 total yards. Imanol Marquez tallied two interceptions. Colt Cruth did lead the Eagles with 111 yards rushing on 13 carries with a score.
West Plains pummels Pampa
West Plains wasted little time on the road against Pampa, scoring 35 unanswered points in the first half to cruise to a 45-13 win and stay unbeaten in district, setting up an anticipated showdown with Canyon ISD rival Randall for the outright district lead next week.
The Wolves (4-3, 2-0) did pretty much what they wanted to offensively against Pampa (2-5, 0-2), piling up 490 yards of total offense. Quarterback Reid Macon threw for three touchdowns in the first half and had a near perfect night, completing 16-of-19 passes for 290 yards.
When Macon wasn’t throwing it over the Harvesters, Slade Russell was running through them, as he had 126 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries. Pampa’s Max Neff had 19 carries for 100 yards and a touchdown.
District 2-4A Division II
Borger rolls past Liberty
After an open week, Borger got off to a strong start in district, routing Lubbock-Cooper Liberty at home 54-23 for the first district win of the season, which also moved the Bulldogs over .500 on the year.
Ryler Moreno had a big game running the ball for Borger (4-3, 1-0) with 19 carries for 197 yards and four touchdowns. He also threw a touchdown pass.
Tyler Brooks was also a multiple threat for Borger, catching a touchdown pass and returning a kickoff 97 yards for a score.
Liberty fell to 2-6 and 1-1.
In the district’s other game, Perryton fell hard at home to Lubbock Estacado, 47-13. Perryton is now 2-6 and 0-2 while Estacado is 4-4 and 2-0.
