Childress handles Friona
The Childress Bobcats snapped a two-game losing skid at the perfect time by getting past Friona 48-13 on Friday on Charlie Johnston Field at Fair Park Stadium in Childress.
The Bobcats controlled the game especially on the stat sheet rolling up 489 yards to the Chieftains 194.
Sophomore running back Lucian Davis had a career outing for the Bobcats. Davis ran right by Friona for most of the contest toting the ball 14 times for a career-high 151 yards with a touchdown. Kobe Sims complemented Davis rushing for 101 yards on 14 carries of his own with a touchdown.
Quarterback Jonah Reed did a superb job in relief of injured Drake Rabe completing 12-of-15 passes for 155 yards with a pair of scores. Cash Hightower was the go-to target catching five passes for 59 yards with two TDs.
Defensively, Jacob Mora led Childress with 15 tackles and a sack.
Childress is now 3-4 overall and 1-0 in district action. Friona is still seeking its first win falling to 0-7 and 0-1.
Tulia tames Dimmitt in district opening win
A late second quarter surge propelled the Tulia Hornets past Dimmitt 20-12 in a District 1-3A Division II opener on Thursday night at Younger Field in Tulia.
After a slow start and scoreless first quarter, the Hornets got on the board first with under five minutes to go in the half when Matthew Yarbrough blocked a Bobcat punt allowing teammate Jarvis Pastrana to pick up the ball on a hop and go 35 yards for a touchdown putting the Hornets up 7-0.
On Tulia’s next offensive series, quarterback David Molina got clicking giving his team some breathing room hitting Logan Beccera in stride down the sideline for a 25-yard connection as the Hornets went into halftime up 13-0.
Tulia tacked on to that advantage early in the third when freshman quarterback Julius Johnson, who rotated in throughout the game, delivered a strike to Gustavo Trevino.
Dimmitt did rally cutting the deficit at 20-12 but never could come any closer.
Molina finished the game 8-of-11 for 46 yards with a score and rushed for 45 yards. Johnson was 7-of-11 for 56 yards and a touchdown. Matthew Lopez led Tulia’s defense with six tackles, four of those for a loss.
Tulia (3-4) is now 1-0 in district play. Dimmitt (2-5) falls to 0-1.
District 2-3A Division II
Muleshoe puts away Lubbock Roosevelt
Muleshoe put together a strong fourth quarter that help get the Mules a big district opening road win at Lubbock Roosevelt, 42-36, on Thursday night at Eagles Stadium in Acuff.
The Mules were able to bounce back after a lopsided loss to Dalhart last week pushing their overall record to 5-2 but more importantly 1-0 in District 2-3A Division II. The Eagles (5-2) drop to 0-1 in the league.
This game was nip and tuck throughout with a 22-22 tie at half and Roosevelt leading by a slim 29-28 advantage at the end of the third quarter.
However, the Mules caught momentum in the fourth quarter scoring 14 unanswered points to seal the victory.
The Mules took the lead back on a quarterback Nathan Martens to Yahir Quezada connection of 34-yards for a score. Following a Martens two-point conversion, Muleshoe was up 36-29. After the Muleshoe defense forced a fumble, the offense went to work once more resulting in a Mauricio Herrera one-yard score that gave the Mules security up 42-29.
Martens was lights out picking apart the Roosevelt secondary going an incredible 20-of-21 (95 percent) for 252 yards with two touchdown passes. Martens also used his feet to chew up 81 yards on only eight carries with another TD.
Davian Sital had a great debut freshly called up from the JV toting the rock 17 times for 101 yards with a touchdown and Herrera showed his versatility rushing for 72 yards with a pair of scores while snagging 11 catches for 82 yards.
Defensively, Muleshoe forced three turnovers with Johhny Hernandez leading way thanks to 13 tackles.
In the other district matchup, Littlefield downed Slaton 55-36.

Non-district quick hits
- Dalhart destroyed Denver City to close out non-district in style with a 43-7 win on Friday night at home. The Golden Wolves close out non-district play 6-1 mark. Quarterback Hunter Trusler was 17-of-27 passing for 264 yards with three touchdowns. Ben Meyer snagged three catches for 92 yards with a score.
- Bushland stayed unbeaten on the year soaring past Andrews 42-12 at home on Friday night. The Falcons are flying high heading into district at 7-0 overall. Offensively, quarterback Quaid Ferris completed 18-of-26 passes for 212 yards with three touchdowns. On the defensive side, Jaxon Fetsch racked up 12 tackles with two of those coming for a loss. Ty Purcell added 12 tackles with a force fumble.
- River Road earned a hard fought 35-34 overtime win at Lamesa on Friday night to snap a three-game losing skid. The Wildcats led 28-14 at half only to see the Golden Tors tie the game up 28-28 and force overtime. In OT, River Road (3-3) quarterback scored on a five-yard run and with the extra-point the Wildcats went up 35-28. Lamesa scored on its ensuing drive, however, the Wildcats defense made a huge two-point conversion stop for the win. Warren was clutch all-night rushing for 115 yards on 20 carries with a TD. Warren also threw for 91 yards with two more scores.
