Canyon came close to a repeat finishing fourth overall with 48 points just 10 behind class 4A state champ Iowa Colony.
“We had an impressive outing,” Canyon head coach Ray Baca said. “It couldn’t have been a better meet for us we just can’t control what everyone else does. I’m just so proud of this group.”
Senior and Missouri signee Hannah Stuart was the Lady Eagle that shined brightest on the University of Texas track. Stuart ended her illustrious Canyon career racking up two more gold medals.
Stuart started the Thursday morning kicking her last leg into gear to pull away from Cadence Patterson of Comal Canyon Lake to win the 3200-meter race for a second straight year with a new personal-best time of 10:36.58.
Close to 10 hours later, Stuart repeated once again defended her title this time in the 1600-meter run holding off teammate Addyson Bristow clocking a 455.04.
“I was a little nervous coming in,” Stuart said. “I’ve been training, and this was my last year, so I gave it everything I had and left it all out there. I wanted to leave my high school career on top and I’m glad I was able to do that and help my team.”
Later Thursday night, Bristow took the medal stand with a silver in the 1600-meter run right behind Stuart pacing a 4:56.29, and under an hour later ran once again as a part of the Lady Eagles mile relay team that got fourth with a season-best time of 3:54.18.
Teammate Ryan Fernandez won two silver medals Thursday. Fernandez clocked a 9:19.36 for a silver in the 3200-meter race and a 4:13.55 to get his second silver in the 1600-meter run.
Brycen Williams of West Plains left Austin with a silver medal for a second consecutive season. Williams, a sophomore, cleared 6-foot-6 in the high jump Thursday morning.
After the team of Nathan Martens, Noah Cantu and Mauricio Herrera kept Muleshoe in contention, Herrera handed the final stick to Sianez with some work to do. Sianez turned on his speed on the final curve and in the final 50 yards passed Gunter’s Reid Robertson and University City Randolph’s Lee Mcmooain to cross the finish line in first place giving the Mules the unbelievable victory.
That race capped off a career night for the senior Sianez who also won a bronze medal in the 400-meter race with a time of 48.39.
The 400-meter relay team of Sloane Hale, Leah Ruthardt, Kenley King and Ashby Graham grabbed a bronze medal with a new season-best time of 48.30 to open Thursday.
Later in the night, the 800-meter relay squad of Hale, Graham, King and Ruthardt, stepped it up taking silver with a new school-record time of 1:41.10.
“I’m exceedingly proud of the commitment and leadership from our relay teams,” Bushland head coach Derek Mauldin said. “It’s always great when the hard work pays off. A school record was broken, and we had two trips to the medal stand. The accomplishments for our relay was truly a team effort. When a team loves each other and works to win that goes a long way.”
Rounding out the day was Canadian’s Preston Neumeier winning a silver in the long jump with a leap of 22-5 3/4. Childress junior Taylor Wiseman brought back a silver in the discus thanks to a toss of 141-7, while Friona’s Kitzy Welch won the bronze medal in the discus (121-4).
Spearman senior and West Texas A&M basketball signee Braylen Lusby ended her fantastic high school career getting on the medal stand one last time with a new personal-best and bronze medal in the 800-meter race clocking a 2:16.33.
