Tascosa punches ticket to UIL Class 5A state golf tournament, Wildorado defends Region I-1A championship

It was a historic two days for the Tascosa boys golf team as the Rebels will advance to state for the first time in over five decades after finishing with a bronze medal at the Region I-5A golf tournament on Monday and Tuesday at the Hillcrest Country Club in Lubbock.

The Rebels shot a two-day total of 305-314 for a score of 619 finishing nine strokes back of champion Burleson Centennial (300-310- 610).

Leading the way for Tascosa was Brady Holmes. Holmes finished fifth individually with the lowest rounds for the Rebels. On Monday, Holmes fired a 72 followed by a 78 on Tuesday for a two-round total of 150.

Teammates Joseph Bybee and Slayde Stevens placed in the top 20. Bybee had rounds of 76-80- 156 for a 17th place outing and Stevens was 19th overall (80-77 – 157).

The UIL Class 5A state tournament is set for April 29-30 at the Legacy Hills Golf Club in Austin.

The Wildorado Mustangs defended their regional title making it back-to-back championships on Monday and Tuesday at the Region I-1A tournament at the Reese Golf Course in Lubbock.

The Mustangs shot a team 36-hole score of 668 to claim their second straight regional crown. Hunter Corman won the Region I-1A individual title with a 36-hole score of 156. Teammate Drew Ratliff was tied for third individually with a 164 two-day tally.

Miami’s Garrett Hale and Fort Elliott’s Rance Angeley qualified as individuals.

In Class 3A, Bushland’s Jenner King knocked off Blanco’s Noah Gallus in the second playoff hole to claim the final individual state qualifying spot at the Region I-3A tournament at the Diamondback National Golf Club in Abilene.

Jenner was superb during both rounds shooting 76 on Monday and a 75 on Tuesday firing an overall 151.

At the Region I-2A tournament at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course in Canyon on Monday and Tuesday, Danner Price of Sanford-Fritch made his way to Austin as an individual qualifier.

Price even found the medal stand with a bronze medal finishing in third place firing rounds of 75-72 – 147.

On the team side, Wheeler came in fourth (670) two shots back of the final qualifying spot.

At the Region I-4A Tournament at the Shadow Hills Golf Course in Lubbock, Randall finished fourth overall with a two-day tally of 307-323- 630. Canyon tied for seventh (318-334- 652).
