Canadian throttles Seminole, Okla., in season opener
The Andy Cavalier era got started in a big way for Canadian, as the Wildcats picked up where they left off last season by going on the road and pounding Seminole, Okla., 55-0, on Friday night.
Canadian (1-0), which is the No. 1-ranked team in Class 3A Division II from Dave Campbells Football Magazine, had no issue moving the ball scoring all 55 points in the first half scoring on seven of their nine possessions.
The Wildcat offense blistered Seminole racking up 517 total yards with 325 coming through the air. Quarterback Camren Cavalier was stellar in his senior debut and third year under center going 11-of-13 for 282 yards with five touchdown passes all in the first two quarters. Luke Flowers made his presence known snagging five catches for 166 yards with three scores and Preston Miller added 63 yards receiving with a TD. On the ground, Kaden Crooks went for 101 yards rushing on only seven totes with a touchdown.
The Canadian defense was equally impressive holding Seminole to 71 total yards that included two fumble recoveries and a pick six from Camden Cook.
Muleshoe lights up Littlefield
The Muleshoe offense already looks in midseason lighting up the scoreboard against Littlefield during a 48-20 drubbing at Benny Douglas Stadium in Muleshoe on Friday night.
The Mules accomplished a rare feat with all of their touchdowns coming outside of the redzone.
Quarterback Nathan Martens picked a part the Wildcat defense with his arm and his feet totaling 491 yards of offense. Martens used his legs to go for 131 yards on only eight carries with a touchdown then was 15-of-25 passing for an eye-opening 360 yards with another three scores.
Running back Daniel Sianez was also very efficient toting the ball 17 times for 121 yards with two TDs, and Yahir Quezada snagged four catches for 151 yards. Aaron Morales made a team-best 16 tackles on defense.
The Mules are now 1-0 on the season. Littlefield falls to 0-1.
Childress holds off Abernathy
In what could be a future playoff matchup come November, the Childress Bobcats earned a hard fought 14-7 home win over Abernathy in a very physical contest Friday night at Fair Park Stadium.
Abernathy (0-1) took a 7-0 halftime lead only to see the Bobcats tie the game in the third quarter when Scout Smith plunged his way in from 2-yards out tying the game, 7-7. Childress (1-0) then took its only lead on the eventual game-winning score in the fourth quarter on a 39-yard pitch and catch from quarterback Drake Rabe to Logan Oldham.
Rabe had a very strong outing going 14-of-23 for 171 yards with a touchdown pass. Senior running back Da’Reon Mathis led the ground game with 66 yards on 22 carries. The Bobcats defense was extremely sound holding the Antelopes to 73 total yards.
Stratford shuts down Spearman
It was a quick night of work as the Stratford Elks earned first-year head coach Jonathan Murphy his first win in style by blanking Spearman 37-0 on Friday night at Lynx Stadium.
The Elks dominated on both sides of the ball holding the Lynx to 67 total yards and only three first downs. On the offensive end, Stratford junior quarterback Bryce Braden trucked through the Spearman defense rushing for 75 yards on eight carries with two scores. Braden also threw for 94 yards and led the team in tackles at linebacker with 14 adding two sacks.
Josue Licon added to Stratford’s ground effort piling up 123 yards on only seven carries with two scores.
The Elks move to 1-0 on the year while Spearman falls to 0-1.
Dimmitt finds win column over Memphis
Dimmitt didn’t hesitate to find the win column to open the 2023 season by getting a convincing home win over Memphis 36-14 at Bobcat Stadium on Friday.
This was a much-needed victory for the Bobcats (1-0) who went winless all of last year.
Dimmitt was able to take control early going up 14-0 after the first quarter then taking a 29-0 lead into halftime. Running back Tony Salazar carried the load for the Bobcats by knifing through the Memphis defense for 247 yards on 21 carries with three touchdowns, two of which were 60-plus yards.
Sophomore quarterback Jack Lunsford was efficient going 5-of-8 for 67 yards with a touchdown pass. The Dimmitt defense also did its part holding the Cyclones to 95 total yards.
