The Dimmitt Bobcats are supporting a new look this season thanks to the 11-year-old son of head coach Aaron Manous.
Sixth grader, Aiden Manous, designed a slick logo for the Bobcats that the team debuted the new look in their season opener against Lubbock Christian.
Manous says that this all came about when he sitting in his man cave at his house over the summer.
Aiden came to him and said he was bored and he was going to go draw some logos.
The logo is shaped like Texas with the Bobcat paw print inside. The Bobcat colors of purple and white are featured in the art work.
“Well it really was kind of a surprise,” Manous said. “We already kind of had a logo because we had a purple helmet, so we had to go with a white paw. I was thinking logo, as in major league baseball logos because he always spends time doing that.”
Soon after Aiden brought the logo to his dad, Manous saw a logo similar on Twitter by AU Designs out Austin by Greg Gold.
Manous then called Gold and asked if he could design the art work for the helmets.
“He [Gold] said give me two weeks,” Manous said. “That’s pretty much how the whole thing came about.”
Manous said he was able to keep the project a secret from his son and players until he debuted them to the team right before the regular season started. Manous’ goal was to make it special for everyone.
“It was so fast,” Manous said. “We didn’t even know it was going to be a thing. We kind of kept it hidden from everybody. We don’t allow them to wear all the fancy stuff, because we are all about uniformity. Every helmet is put together the same. Everything is done the same. We just tried to spice it up a little with that decal.”
Aiden said he worked a long time on designing that logo. But is thankful he had the time on a slow summer afternoon.
“I was just bored,” Aiden said. “I had to draw 30 papers to get it right and then that one, Dad said, ‘okay, that one’s good. Can you add a paw?’ I said, I can do that.”
Aiden did not see his finalized design on the helmets until picture day.
“My dad said he wanted to show me something in his office,” Aiden said. “He said look at this, and I said, I drew that, yay!”
Dimmitt (0-2) squares off with Shamrock (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday night at Bobcats Stadium.
