SHALLOWATER — It had all the makings of a marquee matchup when Shallowater welcomed Idalou to Todd Field for a top 10 showdown of small school powers on the South Plains.

What followed was every bit as electric as advertised — and then some.

Two of the state’s top-ranked in their respective Class 3A Divisions traded explosive plays, defensive touchdowns and momentum swings throughout the night before the Wildcats finally pulled away for a 46-35 victory.

For Idalou head coach Casey White, that was exactly the kind of game he and Mustangs coach Rodney Vincent envisioned when the matchup was scheduled.

“Every time we come over here and play these guys, it’s exactly why Coach Vincent and I schedule it,” White said. “We know we’re going to get a playoff-type environment. We’re going to get better regardless, win or lose.”

Idalou stays unbeaten on the season at 5-0 and beats Shallowater (4-1) for a second year in a row.

The game delivered that environment from the opening whistle.

AJ Huddleston opened the scoring for Idalou with a 5-yard touchdown run, but Shallowater answered in the second quarter when Logan Winn found Micah Blackshear for a 14-yard touchdown pass, with Blackshear making an incredible catch in double coverage.

The Mustangs then appeared to seize control.

Connor Shires intercepted an Idalou pass and returned it 56 yards for a touchdown, putting Shallowater ahead 14-7 with less than four minutes remaining in the first half.

Another Shallowater interception, this one by Manning Mitchell, gave the Mustangs possession again with 40 seconds left. Momentum appeared to be firmly on the home sideline.

Then everything changed.

With two seconds remaining before halftime, Idalou’s Cooper Hammock-Wilson intercepted a Winn pass and raced 53 yards for a touchdown. The Wildcats converted the ensuing two-point attempt to take a stunning 15-14 lead into the locker room.

“I don’t know if either one of us had it on our bingo card that both teams would get pick sixes, but we’ll take it however we can get it,” White said. “We talked about scoring in all three phases, and we did that tonight. That was a huge momentum play.”

The momentum carried into the second half, but Idalou changed the game in a different way — by putting the ball in the hands of Huddleston and letting its offensive line take over.

Huddleston scored on a 3-yard run early in the third quarter, and Jude Heard added a 5-yard touchdown run as the Wildcats stretched their advantage.

After Nathan Cisneros intercepted Winn in the end zone, Huddleston struck again, powering into the end zone from 4-yards out for his third touchdown of the night.

By then, Idalou had built a 36-14 advantage.

But Shallowater had no intention of quietly going away.

Winn and Blackshear answered again, connecting on a 20-yard touchdown pass in the back corner of the end zone to bring the Mustangs back within two scores.

Then Shallowater found another spark.

Winn connected with Gavin Guajardo for a 44-yard touchdown, and after the Mustangs forced another Idalou stop, the game suddenly felt much different.

An offsides penalty gave Shallowater a free play, and Winn took the opportunity to go deep. Blackshear caught the pass, found open field along the sideline and raced 97 yards for his third touchdown of the night.

Just like that, Shallowater had once again turned a comfortable Idalou lead into a game.

The Mustangs’ explosive passing attack kept producing, but Idalou continued to answer with the same formula that had carried it throughout the second half.

Run the ball.

Huddleston finished with 201 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Heard added 74 yards and two touchdowns on 11 carries as the Wildcats piled up 357 rushing yards and 462 yards of total offense.

“We think our identity is multifaceted, we have a lot of weapons on this team, and we’re going to do what we need to do to win,” White said. “We knew we could lean on our offensive line; we call them the bus drivers. Our line took over and accepted the challenge, and we were able to seal the deal by pounding the ball on the ground.”

Shallowater, meanwhile, found most of its success through the air.

Winn finished 14-of-27 for 297 yards and four touchdowns, while Blackshear hauled in seven passes for 161 yards and three touchdowns. Guajardo added three catches for 66 yards and a touchdown.

The difference was that Idalou repeatedly found a response whenever the Mustangs threatened to completely flip the game.

The Wildcats’ two interceptions included the late first-half pick-six and two takeaways that ended Shallowater drives inside the red zone, while Shallowater’s defense also produced three interceptions of its own.

For White, the game ultimately came down to a stretch surrounding halftime.

“We talked about the middle eight, the last four minutes going in, the first four minutes coming out, and I thought that was the difference of the game,” White said.

Idalou’s ability to win that stretch gave the Wildcats the lead. Its ability to control the ground game afterward allowed them to keep it.

The Wildcats added a 15-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining to put the finishing touches on a 46-35 victory.

Even with the win, White viewed Friday night as more than simply another mark in the win column.

“A lot to learn from, we got exposed in certain areas, but that’s exactly what we knew would happen,” White said. “But at the end of the day, really proud of our guys in all phases.”

For two teams with postseason aspirations, that may have been the most important part of the night.

The game was played with the intensity of a playoff contest, the explosiveness of a shootout and the swings of a rivalry — even though the stakes were still non-district.

And for Idalou, it provided exactly what White and Vincent wanted when they put the game on the schedule: a night that would force the Wildcats to find answers.

They did.
