Wildorado Mustangs four-peat as Region I-1A champions, Farwell Steers win Region 1-2A title; Amarillo High Sandies advance out of Region I-5A

The dynasty continues for the Wildorado boys golf team as the Mustangs were able to secure yet another title by winning the Region I-1A championship Monday and Tuesday at the Meadowbrook Golf Club in Lubbock.

This is the unprecedented fourth straight regional championship for the Mustangs, who have won the UIL Class 1A state championship two of the last three years.

The Mustangs shot a 36-hole team score of 706, firing a 347 on Monday followed by a 359 on Tuesday to hold off second place Springlake-Earth (367-345 – 712) by six strokes. Whitharral (712) came in third as a team to also qualify for state.

Hunter Corman was able to win the individual regional championship by edging last year’s regional champion Bo Bradley of Texline on the second playoff hole Tuesday. Corman carded a 72 in round one with three birdies, and finished with a 75 to go with two birdies on Tuesday for a championship score of 153. Teammate Brayden Sides placed ninth with scores of 72-84 for a total of 172.

Bradely, last year’s UIL Class 1A individual state champion, advances back to state as an individual thanks to a 36-hole total of 72-78 – 153. Drew Morphis of Kress also qualified for state placing seventh overall with scores of 86-84 – 170.

The UIL Class 1A state tournament is set for April 27-28 at the Crystal Falls Golf Club in Leander.

Region 1-2A

In a very exciting finish, the Farwell Steers were able to claim the Region I-2A championship on Monday and Tuesday at the Palo Duro Creek Golf Course in Canyon.

The Steers finished the 36th hole tied for first with New Home and had to go to a playoff. Farwell was finally able to outlast the Leopards winning the title on the third playoff hole. The Steers won the tournament and advanced to state for the first time in three years with a two-day score of 309-315 – 624. New Home (624) is headed to state in second and Sundown (658) placed third.

Farwell’s Cooper Nichols was incredible over the two days shooting two unbelievable rounds of 66 and 64 for an 8-under-par 130. Nichols finished the 36-holes totaling 13 birdies and two eagles. Teammate Braddock Foster, the District 3-2A basketball MVP, won a bronze medal of his own with a third place finish. Foster shot a 72-75 to tally a 147.

The UIL Class 2A state tournament is set for April 27-28 at the Lions Municipal Golf Course in Austin.

Region I-5A

For the first time in three decades, the Amarillo High Sandies are headed to the UIL Class 5A state tournament.

It wasn’t easy, and the Sandies had to grind, but thanks to holding off Granbury on the first playoff hole thanks to the heroics of Cale Bright’s winning birdie putt.

With that putt, the Sandies were able to earn the bronze medal finishing in third place to take the final spot at the state tournament Monday and Tuesday at the LakeRidge Country Club in Lubbock. Argyle Black (610) was the Region I-5A team champion as Abilene Wylie placed second (618). AHS finished with a just shot back of the Bulldogs posting a 36-hole total of 312-307 – 619.

Gavin Norrell had it working for the Sandies over the two days placing seventh overall. Norrell fired a first round score of 72 and then registered a 75 in his final 18 holes. Bright followed Norrell with a 157. Bright carded an 81 but went low on Tuesday with a 76.

The UIL Class 5A state tournament is set for April 27-28 at the Legacy Hills Golf Club in Georgetown.

Regional quick hits

  • Bushland’s Jenner King was on fire on Monday and Tuesday during the Region I-3A tournament at the Live Oak Golf Club in Abilene. The multi-sport senior won the Region I-3A individual title with a two-day total of 71-75 for 146. King tallied six birdies over the 36 holes. The UIL Class 3A state tournament is set for April 27-28 at the Jimmy Clay Golf Course in Austin.
  • At the Region I-4A tournament at the Shadows Hills Golf Course in Lubbock, Randall’s Madden Myers punched a ticket to state as an individual. The sophomore was able to finish fourth overall firing a first round 70 and then a second round 69 for a 36-hole total of 3-under-par 139. The UIL Class 4A state tournament is set for April 27-28 at the Legends Golf Course in Kingsland.
