West Texas High sees big week with wins over Sanford-Fritch and Follett

It was the best week yet for the West Texas High Lady Comanches softball team.

The Lady Comanches put themselves right back in the District 1-2A race with a huge win over rival Sanford-Fritch, 8-3, on Tuesday followed by a 22-5 league crossover victory at home against Follett Friday night.

WT High is now 11-4 overall on the year and 3-2 in district play while Sanford-Fritch (9-6-1) stays in first place at 3-1.

In the win against the Lady Eagles on Tuesday, WT High erased an early 3-0 deficit scoring eight unanswered runs. Mackenzie Elliott and Bailey Drennan both had key homers in the victory. Drennan was 2-for-4 with three RBIs while Elliott was 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Haven Lee was strong in the circle tossing all seven innings to get the win, allowing three runs with five strikeouts.

Against Follett, the Lady Comanches used a 13-run third inning to put the game away. Drennan was huge once again going 3-for-4 with a triple to tally a pair of RBIs. Elliott was 3-for-4 with a double, a triple and an RBI and Lee was 3-for-5 with a homer and three RBIs. Teammate Gentry Francis did damage as well going 2-for-4 that included a double and a team-high four RBIs.

District quick hits

West Texas High wasn’t the only hot team in District 1-2A this past week. Highland Park was able to grab a pair of wins by defeating Follett 21-9 on Tuesday and then knocking off Sunray 14-11 on Friday. The Lady Hornets (8-17) are now 2-2 in District 1-2A. In the victory against Sunray, Haley Rogers feasted on Lady Bobcat pitching going 3-for-5 highlighted by two home runs to total seven RBIs.

In District 3-5A, Amarillo dominated Palo Duro, Lubbock Coronado, and Plainview, winning the three games by a combined score of 88-4. The Lady Sandies routed Palo Duro 20-1, handled Coronado 25-3 and blanked the Lady Bulldogs 23-0. AHS stays in complete command of first place in District 3-5A at 11-0 and are now 20-7-1 on the year. Brylee Baker was the highlight over the three victories for AHS, going a combined 8-for-10 at the dish, pounding three homers and tallying 10 RBIs.

Dumas continues to stay all alone atop District 4-4A with two more wins this past week. The Demonettes dominated Pampa 14-14, and then hustled past Hereford 16-1. Yari Vargas was a perfect 8-for-8 over the two games. Vargas had four doubles in both wins with a pair of RBIs. Dumas moves to 8-0 in league play and 23-2-1 overall.

Randall, West Plains and Canyon are all in a second place tie, two games behind Dumas at 6-2. West Plains (17-8) stayed in that tie thanks to a hard fought 1-0 win over Canyon on Tuesday and a 17-3 victory over Borger on Friday. In the shutout over the Lady Eagles, standout pitcher Jaylen Kaps tossed seven innings, scattering five hits without allowing a run while racking up 11 strikeouts. Against Borger, Kaps worked 3.2 shutout innings with nine more K’s.

Canyon (16-10) was able to bounce back from a loss to West Plains, by run-ruling Pampa 12-0 on Friday. Bayleigh Burks hammered a three-run homer deep to left field and Brooklynne Garrett worked a complete game in the circle giving up just one hit with seven strikeouts.

Randall (20-6) earned two wins with a 13-5 victory against Hereford and a 14-0 pummeling of Perryton. Tatum Gibson led the Lady Raiders going a combined 5-for-8 with six RBIs.

Bushland followed up a 17-2 victory over Tulia on Tuesday with a convincing 24-4 run-rule rout of River Road on Friday. The Lady Falcons pounded out 19 hits for the contest, and scored 22 runs over the first three innings. Addison Appier was a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with a double and a triple finishing the game with five RBIs. Teammate Piper Francis was 4-for-5 with four RBIs that included a two-run home run. Bushland (10-13) ends the first half of District 1-3A at 4-1.

Childress completed the first half of District 1-3A at 5-0 thanks to beating Tulia 13-2 on Friday. The Lady Bobcats edged Canadian 2-1 on Tuesday before taming Tulia on Friday. Childress (19-1-1) slugger KJ Felton torched Tulia by going 3-for-3 with a solo homer and three RBIs.
