Talon Jones, Amarillo High, baseball, Sr.

On the diamond: After a hiccup to Lubbock Coronado last Tuesday, Jones and the Amarillo Sandies were able to put back-to-back District 3-5A wins together to close out the week. AHS rebounded against Coronado for an 8-1 win on Friday and then knocked off Plainview 14-5 on Saturday. Jones had a big week in the field and especially at the plate. Over those three games, the senior shortstop went a combined 4-for-9 at the dish with a double to tally eight RBIs.

On the season, Jones has been steady the entire way for an AHS team that is 18-3, hitting .487 with three doubles, two triples and has totaled 23 RBIs. Jones has also scored 23 runs, stolen 11 bases and has a fielding percentage of .958.

Coach Randon Johnson: “A lot of people don’t know this, but Talon was our backup quarterback behind Jett Lopez in the fall. He never got any attention, but us coaches knew he put in so much work that he was always capable of being the next man up. He’s just one of those kind of kids with that much character. On the baseball field, he doesn’t talk the most, but the guys love him and he always gets the job done. He is a great shortstop and is as steady as they come. Nothing seems to ever bother him. We face good pitching all season and he has done such a good job of using the entire field and making the improvements to become such a much better hitter. Talon is just a great overall player for us.”

Jones: “I think the dugout, the team and the energy is great this year. We are a team that has a lot of chemistry and I think that’s why we’re playing well and have been successful. As for myself, I think my hitting has been more aggressive this year. Last year I was a little more selective but now I’m going after the pitches I like. Defensively, I’m just staying out of my head and letting everything come to me.”
