On Thursday, the Demonettes went on the road and grabbed a 6-2 win at Canyon, and then followed that with a 3-0 shutout over West Plains at home Saturday afternoon.

Thanks to those pair of victories, Dumas (21-2-1) is all alone in first place of 4-4A at a perfect 6-0.

On Thursday, Dumas saw a strong performance from standout center fielder Vida Fierro at the plate. Fierro, who was 3-for-4 on the day, set the tone in the top of the first with a solo homer putting the Demonettes up 1-0. A lead the Demonettes never relinquished. In the second, teammate Yari Vargas extended the advantage with a two-run single, and Star Cortes hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth making it 5-0.

Not only did Cortes deliver a big blast, the senior worked a complete game in the circle, scattering six hits, allowing one run with three strikeouts.

On Saturday, Cortes once again was outstanding in the circle. Cortes handcuffed West Plains (15-8, 4-2), throwing another complete game, allowing only four hits without a run while striking out four. The Demonettes defense was also clutch in the victory turning three double plays.

The offense came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Seeing a scoreless game through the first three and a half innings, Dumas took the lead for good when the long balls started happening. Madi Zubia had the first dinger on a deep fly to left field, putting the Demonettes up 1-0. Teammate Mia Fry followed two batters later with a solo shot of her own and all of a sudden it was 2-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, it was Aaliyah Chairez adding to the homer parade with a solo shot that gave Dumas much needed insurance with a 3-0 advantage.

District quick hits

Randall was able to stay two games back of Dumas thanks to a big week of its own. The Lady Raiders picked up a huge 4-3 win over rival West Plains on Thursday followed by an 11-0 pummeling of Pampa on Saturday. The Lady Raiders (18-6 overall) are sitting at 4-2 in District 4-4A. In the two victories, Emma Cuellar paced the Lady Raiders going a combined 5-for-8 with a double, a triple, and totaled six RBIs.

Amarillo High is now all alone in first place of District 3-5A after blanking Lubbock-Cooper 3-0 on the road Saturday. The Lady Sandies (17-7-1) hit the halfway point of league play a perfect 8-0. Lubbock-Cooper (10-10) falls to 6-2. Amree Anglin was lights out in the circle, tossing a complete game, scattering four hits without allowing a run, racking up six K’s. Teammate Braelyn Banda sparked the offense hitting two homers on a 2-for-3 day at the dish to drive in all three Lady Sandie runs.

Caprock is keeping itself in the playoff race at the midway point of the district schedule. The Lady Longhorns (12-9-2, 5-3 in district) stayed in a fourth place tie with Lubbock High after beating Plainview 12-1 on Friday. Grace Morales tossed all five innings in the run-rule win with four strikeouts while teammate Annalei Valdez was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

The Bushland Lady Falcons were able to bounce back from a loss to Childress earlier in the week by downing Dalhart in a 36-0 run-rule victory. Chayney Snelson had quite the day for the Lady Falcons, driving in eight runs behind two doubles and a home run, totaling four hits. Snelson also scored three times. Bushland (8-13) is now 2-1 in District 1-3A.

Through the early portion of the league schedule, Sanford-Fritch has been playing really good softball. The Lady Eagles (9-5-1) are in first place of District 1-2A at 3-0. This past week, Fritch was able to defeat Highland Park 13-2 and then earned another 13-2 victory against Gruver on Saturday. Alli Lovejoy went a combined 4-for-8 in the pair of victories with four RBIs.
