Gruver gets by Farwell

Playing in one of the tougher games of the year, the Gruver Greyhounds passed a major test, pulling away from a very scrappy Farwell team in the fourth quarter to nab a 68-54 victory in the UIL Class 2A Division II regional quarterfinals Thursday at the Caprock Activity Center.

The Greyhounds remain undefeated on the season at 21-0 and will now get Plains (29-7) in the regional semifinals at a time and place to be determined.

Farwell, the District 3-2A champions, end a fantastic year at 25-8.

The Steers gave Gruver its toughest game to date, as the Greyhounds led 20-14 after one and 35-28 at the break. With Mason Lankford and Brock Butler in foul trouble in the third, Farwell was able to close the gap, 46-42 by the end of three, however, Gruver eventually wore down the Steers, outscoring Farwell 22-12 in the final eight minutes.

The second quarter was the difference in the game. Up 8-5 after the first quarter, Nazareth was able to take control, outscoring the Tigers, 17-8 in the second to go up 25-13 at the break. By the end of the third, the Swifts were cruising going up by over 20 points.

Zane Schulte was hot throughout the game, leading Nazareth with 24 points, while making nine free-throws.

Nazareth (22-9) are moving on to the regional semifinals to face Sands (28-6) at 7 p.m. on Monday at Lubbock-Cooper High School.
